Covid 19 app.

I would be interested to get the views of the tribe regarding the app that the government wants us to download.

Unsure about it myself!!!!!!!!

Why would you be unsure, they already know everything, where you live, tax, power, water, rates and health records, they know your movements everytime you use your credit or EFTPOS cards, they have access to your Metadata from your mobile already. If we can a save a life why wouldn't we download the app. I did it yesrterday

Go ahead and download, but be aware, because it is running in the background all the time, your phone will be power hungry!

We've been avoiding everyone like the plague. Even our neighbours we stay well clear from & talk over the fence at a distance while mobile is inside. We also leave the phone at home when going for a walk or walk to the shops.

I will get more Bluetooth signals from people in our block of units. I get Bluetooth signals from our garage which is further than any unit.

Unless they have come up with some distance algorithm for Bluetooth which is multi signal & allowing processing for each model of phone I doubt one can narrow distance to 1.5 metres.

No need to we never take a phone with us, when we just go to town shopping, we are not slaves to our phone (1 between the 2 of us) In fact Bluetooth and many other features we perceive as useless are turned off, thus battery life is extended.

Gundog, It could help save your life (or somebody else's). If you have a phone why not take advantage of it? It is of no use to you sitting at home. Stay safe.

I havnt carried a phone for over 5 years, I won't be starting now, primarily because this whole Covid19 affair has been a massive overreaction and scare campaign where less than 0.03% of the population has been infected and 99.97% of the population have been frightened beyond belief IMHO.

Yep, it is mind boggling when you read & hear some peoples attitude. Overreaction/scare campaign - it sounds like you may wear a hat made of Alfoil & think the world is run by reptiles. Hate to sit around a campfire with these people.

Wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot barge pole. I wonder how secure the database is? The Govt only tells us part of the story.

Yes, we'd rather sign up for reward cards, Facebook, Twitter etc.

 This....................!

So you may as well download it.

It may save a life but more importantly, if we reach or better that 40% target, we can open up our society/community sooner and with far more confidence.

Since I posted this I have done some digging.

Fact 1. The government have selected Amazon's Australian I cloud servers to store the info. Why wasn't an Australian company used and why wasn't this made public from the get go??

Fact 2. U.S law enables their security agencies to subpoena information from Amazon Australia servers overriding Australian laws unless the country is a "qualified foreign government" which Australia is currently not. To become a "qualified foreign government" would require legislation. If you add to this the amount of hacking that has occurred on totally "secure" data bases in the past by individuals for financial gain, the the picture takes on a very different complexion. Data bases are here to stay I accept that as a fact and we can only make them as secure as we can but, why an American company?????.  I have very little sympathy with the views of Barnaby Joyce generally but, in this instance, I think he has a good case for exercising caution with regard to this app.

Ultimately, we should all do what we think is right.

I stated my views earlier in this thread. We are nowhere near anyone, let alone for 15 minutes.

The biggest issue I feel for us is a public walkway next to us at the foreshore. It is knee-deep in people walking & running in both directions. Council could easily make it one direction & people use another path for the opposite direction.

We walk elsewhere to avoid crossing paths of 300 or so people for each walk. Each person is closer than a metre for a second only, but we feel this is not a risk worth taking, so we walk in the quietest streets to avoid the masses.

You have to remember that most of the sceptics on this type of forum also lived through & believed the "Reds Under the Beds" conspiracy when it was floated back in the 50's & 60's. Also, most of the Grey Nomads these days are on all forms of social media giving out personal & family details, use their phone for google maps, are on some form of Welfare (e.g. Pension, Health Card etc.) & then think "Big Brother" is going to get them through the Covidsafe App. News flash for you, they already know all about you.

Graham what do you think would have happened if no restrictions were put in place during this highly contagious desease, that you describe as an overreaction?

Absolutely true....we only have to look at the problem in some other countries to understand the wisdom of our Govt's actions. But it seems that some people always are confused by logic? Cheers

I'm not so sure about the app but what the heck. I tried to download it. Nothing in Google Play. I have an Android phone. So some Googling and I find out that the app needs Android 6 or higher. We have 1 phone between the 2 of us. Been that way forever. No need for multiple phones in our 2 person household. Our phone is a Samsung Galaxy 3. Yeah it's old. It runs on Android 4. So unless someone is going to give us a new phone then no app for us. We can't be the only old facts in Australia with old devises!!!

I am sure that none of the patients or staff in any of the ICU wards around Australia who have been personally impacted by the pandemic would be too worried about the database privacy issues. Strewth, this is Australia.....not Sweden. Download the App and think of others (including the poor medical staff) who are dealing with this issue first hand. DOWNLOAD!!!! After the dust settles, then that would be a good time to debate all of the various issues; in the meantime, people's welfare and safety are and should remain of paramount importance.

My phone is too "silly" to run this software. However, if I turn on its Bluetooth capability, will others be able to detect me, and will I be notified if a COVID-19 carrier has come into contact with me? Can I upload my phone's "Bluetooth identity" to the COVIDSAFE database even if it can't support the software?

We had a dumb phone up until a couple of years ago. We changed to a smartphone to avoid the NBN & run our decade old Mac via hotspot. Couldn't do the last census as our computer was & still is, too old!

I use an Android phone & a Mac computer so not familiar with an iPhone.

I heard on ABC RN that there is an issue with Bluetooth on the iPhone that Bluetooth doesn't run in the background.

I guess these statements make me very wary.   If it was so beneficial, why do "they" feel that "they" have to bolster it with a carrot?  Talk about patronising.

I am neither for or against.  I just don't have a smart phone and its too much trouble to do anything about it.  I guess I forget my phone 50% of the time anyway and the other 50% its usually got a flat battery. lol
