Latest News from Broken Hill

I've moved my UHF into my caravan , watching and listening the traffic on the Barrier Highway . I am in Isolation for 2 weeks minus one day . Just heard on the 2 way that a lot of people are camped on the side of the road . I wonder why that is . Have been hearing discussions of where it may be safe to stop and where not , because of the virus . BW Reporting from "The Hill"

We headed east back home on the Barrier Highway last year, not a lot of rest stops, we stopped overnight at a gravel pit, roughly half way between BH & Wilcanni next to a dry river, south side, would not want to be there for long.

There is a rest stop near Musheroo, a little east on the Highway between Wilcannia & Cobar, ok for a day or two, but beyond that it would be a bit tedious. Other than that you would need to look off the Highway for kms.

Yeh J I'm a big user of gravel pits , having dug a few in my time . I think the truckie I heard on the UHF was talking about people camped in town , Cannot go and have a look as I am staying isolated for a couple of weeks and then I may be allowed to go out to the station where I was just about to go to 200kms North on the Tiborburra Road , near Packsaddle . You know I cannot see why flies and mozzies cannot transfer this thing . I am pretty sure they could .

Might ask one later on tonight , as I'm usually up real early enjoying a cuppa and listening to the radio. Tonight I'll have my ears on. (truckie talk) for listening to the UHF .

Just heard service station at Yunta(SA boarder) was still serving meals , are not they supposed to be only take away's ?

Struth! BW, is that what boredom is like mate confuse biggrin Sitting around listening to UHF biggrin

You have bought back very good memories of the good old fashioned CB radio days, many moons ago now sadly.

I set up and ran a CREST base (Citizens Radio Emergency Service Team). I and I think for memory about 15 trained monitors would sit around listening to channel 9, the emergency channel. Those days mobile phones were not even thought of. We had a great working relationship with emergency services and were in contact with them many times. One bad accident in the bush in the Weternport Peninsula south of Melbourne VIC  comes to mind. I had a Cougar SSB radio that had 'sliding' (slides in between frequencies) capabilities fitted with a slide mount so I could have it in the car with a 6' whip on the roof then take it out and put in my unit at the time with a huge 'spider' and 'Ringo' on the roof. R.I's. (Radio Inspectors) Also come to mind in my very early days. I had a special licence in the end due to the CREST thing. The CREST base was a similar set up but with a base station radio and a huge mast with a Ringo sitting on top and booster. A local lady donated a back room for us to use. They were the good old days and I tell you that for free.

As a famous person said in a song, "Thanks for the Memories"

Enjoy your listening to UHF mate.

Mmm, I just went off topic I think, sort off. Sorry. Not like me at all winkbiggrin

Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

Morn. Doug. I'm always off topic . I had an incident a few yrs. back driving a Road Train in the bush near Middlemount in Qld , someone called Emergency over the two way, they had no mobile reception at an accident , had to relay to emergency services , they were an hour away unfortunately . This is a reason why caravaners or even truckers should keep their transmissions to a minimum , so emergency signals can get through.

If yacking go down a channel , preferably 2 channels down .

Doug. Ive still got a 27meg. sideband , tried it last year but no one was there . That might change soon everyone will be doing what I am doing soon .

I have relative who does safety checks & tags equipment. He was doing some odd jobs around the home. No safety glasses, no earmuffs, no mask, grinder/sander lead showing coloured wires & a multi trip hazard site while clouds of dust flying everywhere.

I wound him up a bit over the hypocrisy & gave him new ear plugs & dust masks (a spare as well) which I keep in the car!

After studying this for some time,I think that the weights should be OK? Those panels weigh about 16kg each,so we have around 130kg spread over a 6-7 metre chassis.Should be fine.Cheers

Trucks are starting up again on the highway , not a peep out of the two way. Few cars still getting about town . I was thinking , it would be a good time to catch the drugies , they would still get about . But I suppose there are more important things to do.

I think a lot of people have gone back to Adelaide , they only use this as a work base .

Just talked to a truckie , who was heading North , said border is shut down ,only transport allowed through and they will shut that down also in the next couple of days. Will confirm with another truckie when that one gets out of contact . He said no cars or caravans .

1:33 A.M. S.A. and Broken Hill time : Cannot confirm that on the internet . Shall try the next truck .

2:38 A.M. Truckie wasn't sure what they were doing , but said S.A. police were manning the boarder , might only be SA closed . NSW web site says still open .

if the truckies have to isolate things will soon grind to a halt unless they can organise some safe way to do change overs at the boarders

Being a truckie myself , don't really like calling them up , don't know who you are going to get , knowing what some of them are like , I suppose I used to get grumpy also .

I remember just coming over a dirt road for a couple of hundred kilometers , with a wide load . Talking to a tourist about said road , he was saying how rough it was , I replied , some thing on the order of, man you don't know what a rough road is if you think that is rough. After that I said to my pilot , I cannot believe I said that! He said , neither could I. Must have been grumpy.
