Coronavirus ... let's all obey the Government request to keep us Aussie safe.

I guess that you like me have noticed that the Co-Vid19 has taken over the headlines everywhere and thus this thingo about Climate Change seems to have died a sudden death. And so it should. There are more important issues and challenges ahead of us than this beat up Climate Change.

I must say that I have been very impressed with the way our Prime Minister Scott Morrison has presented his case re the Co-Vid 19 to the Australian people. I am sure glad that we have Scott as our P.M. in this national crisis.

Ok, to me, he appears to have a wealth of knowledge which he is naturally prepared to share with us.

Mind you, As for the Government shutting things down - I dont know the answer Scott Morrison is buggered if he does and if he doesnt not a position anyone of us would like to be in.

I, like nearly everybody in Australia have no knowledge or recall as to the drastic measure that were implement during the Second World War.

I do recall the "Rationing System" after the war on essential food items. As I was born in 1939 I have no recall of the war. However this world wide pandemic virus appears to have a far longer journey than most of us probably visualise.

Jay&Dee are honouring the instructions re the stay at home. We would like to think that the people of Australia adhere to the requests and instructions from our Government.

Our lifestyle is about to change forever, as we see our retirement investment nose dive and of course we do not know where the  bottom of this crash is.

Stay safe everyone and we hope to one day see you out and about in the great outdoors.

Jay&Dee

After reading many of the posts on the various topics relating to the Virus on here I think at least a few have offered good advice when they say Stay Put.
As was proved 100 years ago in the post about the Spanish flu, isolation is just so important.
Stay home or stay in a convenient spot if you are on the road.
Travelling from capital cities to country regions will not help and will place even more pressure on local resources which are already stretched to the limit in many areas. I was surprised to read just the other day that a doctor actually advised people to do this.

Take care everyone

Good one Jay&Dee. I tend to agree with all you have said. I am a bit annoyed with one thing that has been announced over night to do with money but I don't want your thread to be closed down due to getting political so will leave it at that.

The thing that worries me is, being full time in my aluminium teepee and no base camp as such I am not sure what to do for the best. I suffer from the cold and that is the reason I head north every year then have to leave there September as I can't cope with high humidity and heat, a catch 22 situation. I am, as we speak, in Young NSW and it gets pretty cold here in winter so best not here, I also don't want to ask my friends if I can stay here out of their way as I am now and ware my welcome out however, it looks like I can't go north or south as will get stopped at the boarders and made to 'self isolate' for 14 days. I think. Not a problem to me really as long as there is some where to do that in my aluminium teepee. There lies another possible problem, I have heard caravans and motor homes etc are not suitable for that purpose and a Motel will have to be used, mmm, at around $100 per night, it is not possible for me.

That all said, I am prepared to make a run for it at the end of this week and head north if I can still get over the QLD/NSW boarder without 'self Isolating' and get to my daughters in Townsville as soon as I could. Hopefully things will have settled enough by September to head south again. I am finding it very difficult in deed and have never felt so 'lost' in my life. I spose I sound very selfish and I don't really want that but my health could be effected and nothing to do with the current world situation.

Again, like many others in my situation, I am not sure what to do for the best as nothing has really been said about us travellers within OZ (Grey Nomads) or at least that I have heard.

Edit.....Forgot to say, my car is in dry doc again for today and tomorrow due to the running hot problem and I am not confident it will be sorted even then.

Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

Huge difference now to WW2 .Australia was not told of the seriousness of the invasion that was on our Northern frontier at the time Played down at the time to a great degree.
This time there is not much news that is hidden. The media is inclined [in my opinion] to overstate and cause doubt and panic. Global climate change extremes before this virous .
Not much comfort for those that out of necessity need to escape the cold winter months by being able to travel north

I can see where you are coming from Chief and I imagine that there is many others in similar situations. But if you decide to head north it's a given that you will be having a few stops, e.g. fuel. There's messages around saying fuel bowsers are a transmission point. Lets say that you stop in Dubbo for fuel and pick up the virus from a bowser or maybe you used the toilet there and the virus was on a door handle or the one into the shop. You don't show any symptoms for a few days or maybe not at all and you travel up through NSW and Qld and at every stop for fuel or otherwise you leave a bit of virus behind.

Now someone travelling east to west or the other way crosses your path, they just want to get home or somewhere more comfortable to stay and they use the same servo that you did and are now carrying the virus east or west spreading the virus as they go.

Think of the ramifications of what one traveller can do and multiply that many times. All in the name of comfort or getting to a better place. Theres going to be thousands of uncomfortable and dead people around for the duration of this event. Many millions if you include the world.

Carefully reassess how much you suffer from the cold and how important it is to you to get somewhere warmer, is travelling not really essential. You might have to go hunting for some furry skins (warm clothes). I was up near the north pole one time, pretty cold too and our guides said, there is no bad weather only bad clothing. Yep we were warm enough.

Crikeys, I think I caught something. Thats the longest post for me, ever.

Stay safe wherever you choose.

get a flu shot early even if you have to pay for it then get the government one later i expect the government one may be hard to get as there are calls for it to be made available to everyone for free. there is also a pneumonia vaccination but it doesn't protect against all of the strains

if you are travelling north an get ill it won't take long for them to work out where you have come from. consider how you are going to meet up with family do you isolate before or after you get there, will they be putting you at risk or will you be putting them at risk . tough call but i would have thought a caravan /motor home that is self contained would be a perfect place to self isolate parked in a corner of a caravan park obeying all the social distancing rules or out in the bush somewhere on your own

diggerop, I know exactly what you are saying and be assured all of what you have said is at the front of my decision making process. I know though that I have always and will always use disposable gloves when refuelling and don't use public toilets as I have my own in the aluminium teepee. I also have a set up in the car for emergency use for what some would call #1's. The gloves could stay on until I have paid and back in car. Even though I use the gloves I still use hand sanitiser after. I keep the steering wheel clean and car keys etc. Mobile phone, handles etc also get a daily clean.

I have used cash mostly when buying things like fuel and food etc for many moons but just this weekend gone have changed to leaving the cash or most of it in the bank and using my credit card for as many purchases as possible.

I would be reasonably confident and say at risk of getting shot down, that I would be safe. Under normal circumstances....But as we all know now, these are not normal circumstances.

I will bite the bullet and ask my friends if I can stay put out of their way as much as possible until things change enough to make a safe move. I can only ask. I am worried I will put them in a horrible situation of having to say something they don't wont to say, as we are good friends. I usually head up to the house each afternoon for a chat and drink but not tonight as need the car to get up the hill and back. That could be changed to maybe only once a week etc.

I am still thinking about all this as are many others. I will sort it out, just not sure how or when, just yet. Very soon though.

I think we are in a very similar boat as a lot of other people, possibly very comfortable place in aspot separated by a couple of large trees from others in there RVs in this showground.

Short walk down the road in this small rural town there is roadside stall selling onions, tomatoes and cappos. Around the corner anther is sellling pumpkin, there is food store with most needs, with limits.

Reading the reports I am starting to really think we are exiled here until the council hands us a eviction notice or we get the all clear from the con 19

I could make a run for it to my home 2 hours away in Brisbane.

I really don't like that idea as we live in a multi cultured city really have more space around us here with less people.

More thought needed.

We have just returned home and stored the motorhome. Sad but maybe that's what we all have to do.

A couple of things are worrying me.
The media and Twittervers are pumping some crazy headlines out. Scaring folks witless.
Our retirement investments have fallen by almost 50%. So pension here we come.
I have a tumour and was scheduled to have an operation in a couple of weeks. That has now been cancelled.
I feel for the PM and the CMO. The keyboard warriors are giving them hell. But who would want their jobs?
Teachers in Qld are threatening strike action. When did teachers know more about health than the medical experts?

I've been stressing over a tumour that had to be removed within 12 months. Now my stress levels have gone up. God knows what my blood pressure is. But what can we/I do about it?

As long as my supply of chocolate holds out I'll manage. But if there's a run on it I will get really, really mad.

Stay safe.

Great topic and great sentiment. Its pretty simple really really, the government needs our help and support to beat this virus and all we need to do is stay home.

Dozens of vans heading South on the Pacific Highway today, around Kempsey.I'm not sure if this is normal, but I doubt it.I was travelling at 110km/hr (+/-) but was regularly overtaken by  cars and vans travelling at over 120km/hr,so they seem pretty keen to get somewhere in a hurry? Cheers

Well after all the things that have taken place today on the news and the discussion here. I have ruled out QLD. I have spoken to my daughter in Townsville and made many phone calls and given major thought and planning to all this today and have decided to get back into my home state of VIC. I have a plan for 'self isolation' if compulsory but can be done anyway. Location has been chosen and just have to finalise that when I now the day I leave here then should be out of NSW by Wednesday sometime. The only thing stopping me even as we speak, I have no car due to being at the car doctor. I hope they are using masks there as I don't want the car getting the virus.

So, I will be safe and not pass anything to anyone else.

I have checked the winter woollies. The gas heater fitted in the teepee is working, as is the shower and toot so ready.

Bring on a VIC winter even though I will be slightly isolated.

I actually feel a bit relieved now.

 Hi Dougwe.

Pleased you have made positive decisions, top edge of Victoria along the Murray would be my choice but then I not wearing your shoes.

Would you take 5 and sort my lot. 2 hours from home and I do not want to go there, staying put in the showground or moving to  somewhere else where we could hold up.

Bring on 2021 quickly and safely for all.

I flew into Sydney from South Africa late yesterday arvo believe me there is nothing more frightening than being on the other side of the world watching your only way home shutting down. The last thing I wanted was to be stranded in Africa without any means to get out and then have to rely on their public health system if did get coronavirus complications. I am now in a 14 day self isolation but that is only a small inconvenience compared to the alternative. I feel sorry for those Aussies who are still stranded abroad as a result of governments shutting down travel into or out of their countries.  Not a lot of news was coming out of Australia inthe last month (other than a video of some women fighting over toilet roles) as usual everything on CNN and the other world media channels was focussed on what Donald Trump, China or Europe was doing. I learnt more from my wife during our daily video calls and even that was usually about the family or what she couldn't buy due to panic buying. It came as a real shock when the news channels started reporting that the Australian government had instructed all Australian citizens to get home immediately or risk not getting back at all - imagine the panic and stress that causes especially for older people in trying to organise to do that. I can't thank enough those Qantas crew members who have volunteered to risk their own health just to get Aussies back home - the international airports I passed through in Durban, Joburg and Sydney are all eerily quiet..

Cheers

All the best, Doug.
Do you have other family, friends in Victoria? If not lay up in or near a town that has reasonable hospital facilities.

It's a pity you're missing out on the great weather in Townsville (minimums of 21, up to 31-32 during the day). And there's news that there may be another "Low" up in the Gulf. For us the last one was a fizzer! We only got a total of 100mm of rain from it but people out west got a good bit.

And for the others - be wise with your decisions on super - hopefully it will bounce back (touch wood, cross fingers).

Dougwe, Perhaps give the car a good clean before you leave mate. Especially door handles steering wheel, gear shift, bonnet release handle. Anything those mechanics may have touched. Just to be on the safe side. But I honestly believe we are a much lower risk here in the country.

Stay safe mate.
