Electric overhead for trucks in Germany

Germany's first electric Autobahn for hybrid trucks opens near Frankfurt

The project, called Elisa (electrified, innovative heavy traffic on the Autobahn) is being tested in real traffic by five logistics companies with hybrid, battery-powered trucks on one of the busiest stretches of Autobahn in Germany.

Very interesting - would like to know how they get the electrical feed as the overhead wires are hanging loose?

Good Luck.

Not as loose as they look. The poles look close together too. An optical illusion created by a telephoto lens.
Cheers,

Germany is a good place to trial something like this. If you have been on the autobarns, the volume of trucks it is on a whole different scale. It makes Australia look like a quiet backwater by comparison.

Except on Sunday, when no trucks are allowed to move to give a day a week for the cars!

Catenary only needs to be installed along the straight & easy sections as the small battery will get the truck through intersections. Hume Highway installation maybe???

'The DAF CF Electric is a full electric 4x2 tractor unit developed for road haulage of up to 37 tonnes in urban areas, where single-axle or dual-axle trailers are the norm. The vehicle is based on the DAF CF ? named ?International Truck of the Year 2018? ? and is operated fully electrically using VDL?s E-Power Technology. The core of its intelligent powertrain is a 210-kW electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery pack with a current total capacity of 170 kWh. The CF Electric has a range of up to 100 kilometres, depending on the weight of its cargo, making it suitable for zero emissions high-volume transport in the urban areas. The batteries have a 30-minute quick-charge feature and a full charge takes just one and a half hours.'

Good place for it since the truck traffic is essentially an infinitely-long train anyway. All at the same speed of 80kmph, and no overtaking allowed for very long stretches (and caravans are bound by the same rules) But different to the US where in many states trucks get along at 75mph.
