Can anyone advise are the VW or Mercedes motorhomes front wheel drive or rear wheel as I have a nephew retiring next month and he isn't interested in Japanese motorhomes only the European motorhomes and I said to him I thought they were only front wheel drive and not real suitable to him going out in the bush.He believes they are rear wheel drive and he is looking to spend 50 to 80 k so will be an older model.Would appreciate any advice.

I seem to recall that Mercedes were rear wheel drive up until about 2015,while the VW is front wheel drive, although 4wd was an option too?? Probably best to find some that are for sale and call the vendor? I have heard of 3500kg GVM on a Mercedes, but can't remember where. Good luck with your search.Cheers
Whats so bad about Jap diesels ? Tmk its mainly VW thats FWD . If your on the black stuff most the time and careful driving off road ? Imo trans is stronger, easier serviceable as RWD .
Thanks everyone for the info.He is going to purchase a Mercedes sprinter.
Hi
You/he have decided OK.
But to answer the original question. The small VW camper rigs on a Transporter base may be front wheel drive or 4WD. But in the next sized up models VW Crafter and Mercedes Sprinter both used the same larger body from the mid 2000s to some years back. Made in the same factory even. However they used their own different motors, gearboxes and axles. But all rear wheel drive. The very new models have now changed to front wheel drive.
cheers jaahn
PS Both available with various GVM from about 3500 to 4500 and even more in the heaviest Merc.
