Capital city ones yes.....regional towns no. Capital cities are mostly concrete and green parks with Govt backing and plenty of insurance whereas regional towns have older wooden building and parched dry with the bare minimum of public liability insurance. Taken to extremes we'd ban just about everything!

If there is a fire risk then, obviously, no.

Otherwise yes; NYE is a celebration and tradition and should not be stopped because a few people wish to make us all feel guilty about... something...?

The Sydney fireworks, particularly, are a world-wide event and we should show the world Oz has tenacity.

Finally; it would be a totally pointless gesture - the money is irrelevant, we have more than enough to help those we chose to help.

You may not be able to see them with all the smoke or breath for that matter.

It would be better for your health to watch it on TV. Maybe they have done a 3d animation of the fireworks without smoke.

When we return home from dinner & the movies, we will listen to the Brissy CBD fireworks and sit on the front patio to watch the mini fireworks at the Glen Hotel a few streets away. They always put on a great show & I presume that it will be the same this year.

I think that the Sydney Fireworks and maybe many others are part of fundraisers for bushfire victims, so that has to be a good thing.

I agree that where there is little risk then the show should go on, particularly where it is linked to an appropriate fund raiser. Perhaps it will give our Prime Minister an opportunity to put on show his great marketing, oops sorry .. Leadership skills.

Many years ago we were at the New Year's Eve Concert in the Sydney Opera House. The intermission was timed for the Sydney fireworks.

It was brilliant, while fireworks ash rained down like Pompeii on the glass over the Opera House Foreshore Foyer we drank champagne & stuffed our faces, thoroughly enjoying ourselves with relatives from Europe.

My only complaint was slightly sore neck from looking up!

The Sydney fireworks is more that a bunch of fire crackers. Many businesses and the tourist dollar is tied to this event. While ill probably never go to it, I think it's a good thing for our country. If we decided to stop it this year. Next year we might not get as many visitors, less money, less tourism. It's a bit of a balancing act really. .

One year the fireworks were cancelled, shifted 26 days due to rain for another go, not too many complaints at the time!

All these fires are unusually early for the time of year,
Many councils have cancelled their own firework displays for different reasons, imo it would have been good if the capital cities had have done the same but the tourist $ are huge, as we all know

Which words are insensitive etc.

As I see it, the tragic loss of life & the fantastic contributions of Volunteers as well as paid fire fighters, and the NY Fireworks are completely dissociated matters.

Of course we all are entitled to our opinions & the right to express them .. in a civil manner.

Thankfully our local council decided to abandon its policy of pointless end-of-year noise making. Perhaps the lingering smell of wind blown bushfire smoke had something to do with it.

Fortunately, the authorities saw fit to tie up a fire brigade for the duration of the event, otherwise it may have been a disaster if they had been away fighting real fires in the surrounding hills.

I'm rather bemused by all this.

No one has answered my request for information on which words are 'insensitive, shallow, disrespectful ... etc'.

Perhaps Mariner30 can help by telling me what he was referring to.

No one has mentioned how firework affect animals. Humans seem to think we are the only important species on the planet. Dogs in particular are traumatised, oh but we want fun dont win...theyll get over it. In rural areas (Nagambie in our case) other native animals suffer. Tony

I just want to know if you were referring to any of my words, given that your post followed directly after my comments. Having re read my post, I can't see how they could attract such a reaction except perhaps if my comments about ScoMo offended. Maybe they were unnecessary.

In case you misinterpreted my intent please be assured that I have a great appreciation of the contribution of emergency services personnel of all sorts, paid or volunteers and have great empathy for all those who have lost loved ones or even possessions in this current tragedy. I too, like you did in the CFA, have made personal contributions to disaster relief in the past. In just one case it took me away from my young family for 3 months.

Local ratbags set off fireworks at 3AM on weekends, presumably after they've consumed their drugs and alcohol. One bird breeder told me that his birds drop dead off the perch out of sheer fright.

No, those words...and others... are what l saw, read and heard in a number of different debates on the subject of cancelling the fireworks,

In newspapers, TV and radio...plus the odd pub test or two,

The original post did ask " what are your thoughts " or similiar
