The ABS wrote to me when I had a small business with an ABN, they wanted to know my turnover, how many staff etc etc.
I told them it was none of their business and check with the Taxman, they replied that I would be fined "x" amount per day until I gave the information they wanted.
I made up a whole load of crap and they thanked me for my co-operation.
At the last census debacle. I couldn't even log-in as my Mac's OS was too old. I phoned them & they would send out a paper copy. I said I was literally going on holidays for a few months so couldn't do the census.
All they could do is scrub me off the census. They did not want to know my computer was too old.
Still haven't upgraded the computer as it works perfectly ok with 16 bit files from a 21mp camera. So probably won't be doing the next census either!

Be very careful with things like this. It could quite easily be a scam. We had something similar "from ASIC" and it was a complete scam - albeit very convincing had I not rang them to check. It might all be part of a sophisticated (and not so) scammer's method of obtaining information about a part of someone else's identity. They put all the different elements they collect together to create a whole new fictitious person but your details are part of the picture!!!!
If in doubt ring up the source and verify that it is a genuine request before you give them any information. ABS contact for this is 1300 135 070 between 9 and 4 (AEST) Monday to Friday.
