LED light can damage eyes, health authority warn

https://www.france24.com/en/20190515-led-light-can-damage-eyes-health-authority-warns

The "blue light" in LED lighting can damage the eye's retina and disturb natural sleep rhythms, France's government-run health watchdog said this week.

New findings confirm earlier concerns that "exposure to an intense and powerful [LED] light is 'photo-toxic' and can lead to irreversible loss of retinal cells and diminished sharpness of vision," the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) warned in a statement.

You can now buy "Sunnies" that negate and filter out the Blue light because of this.

From the same article ...

Finally, the agency cast doubt on the efficacy of some "anti-blue light" filters and sunglasses.

I have done a lot of development work on lasers over the years and am a little paranoid about point light sources - I like being able to see!

*Never* believe any laser is eye safe. *Never* look directly into one and this includes its reflections.

All LEDs are point light sources and as they have become much more efficient over these past 40 years they now pack one hell of a lot of energy into a very small emitter.

*Never* look directly into LED torches or similar.

Exposure to such light sources, if their power is too high, *will* destroy your sight - don't mess with them and don't shine them into people's faces as "a bit of fun" - children especially need to be taught this.

LED lighting comes with fitted diffusers. Without the diffusers they are useless for lighting.
LED LASERs on the other hand can be dangerous to look at with the naked eye or through optics and the invisible infra-red ones are especially dangerous.
