RE: Wikicamps forcing upgrades

Wikicamps won't crash and burn. Obsolete computer hardware and software has been with us since forever - I have a shelf load in my garage waiting for the next hard rubbish collection - and the scythe in perfect working order my uncle had on his shed wall was never much use in my lifetime either

I couldn't do the last census as my computer was too old. I phoned them up & told them & they put in the census at their end that I was on holiday. They didn't want to know about the old computer.

Still using the same computer so maybe it is going to look like one long holiday!

The oil companies have all decided to stop selling petrol and diesel from tomorrow because they have invented a product they say is much better. Of course it won't work with your existing car so you'll have to buy a new one - you'd be OK with that I imagine...?

Already happening Mike. Several countries have announced an end to sales of fossil fuel cars and given the relative pace of obsolescence of cars and electronics, the time scale isn't a lot different

Fossil free cars will not be around for at least 10 years, will have to wait and see if happens by then.

You have two choices, find away to get Wikicamps operating or find an alternative. There is no use complaining about the state of affairs, it won't change anything.

Android users could try searching for a generic upgrade to their OS or look at emulators. Apple who can't update their OS further and Win mobile users have no options.

A fact of life since technology entered our lives, app developers who want to improve their apps and provide features that users request have no choice by to leave older less flexible OSs behind or their systems will be comprised and they will lose users tired of a stagnant malfunctioning product (yes, V2 *was* faulty). Blame your hardware developer if newer OS aren't supported because that is the root cause of any fail-to-update woes.

WC isn't forcing you to update but they are no longer supporting WC V2.xx. For now, all except for the WC forum still function. If you deleted V2 in anticipation of installing V3 and can't, it was never suggested and wasn't necessary, so that's on you.

I repeat, there is no use complaining. It is what it is.

Not sure just what the drama is? we have WikiCamps (seldom use it) installed on a 4 year old IPad, loaded it this morning without drama.

Had a look at WikiCamps site, it clearly states system requirements "Minimum requirements: iOS 10.3, Android 5.0, Windows 10" most software has a life, after which it no longer runs on contemporary equipment, its a sad fact of life, everything eventually wears out and needs replacing.smile

Damn! But you people just love being walked over.

Why are you so acquiescent? It isn't "What it is" *it* can be changed if enough people have the courage to get off their backsides and change it.

But... having said that... such behaviour is an Australian tradition....

We got it last year for the first time, also got a smart phone for the first time as well. After a few weeks didn't really use it.

We actually used it more for where not to stay as all the places noted on it were pretty filthy.

This year didn't even bother. We have no trouble finding places but we are a car only.

Mike no one is being walked over. If you can't upgrade to WC V3, keep using V2. You're whinging for the sake of whinging, probably because you chose a redundant device and now regret that choice.

Dabbler: clearly you haven't read all the thread. Oka74 no longer has access to the database, which was the agreement when he bought WikiCamps, nor has my Android 4 tablet and, I suspect, many others are in the same situation - however my Android 5 tablet and Android 6 phone still do so I'm afraid I cannot offer you satisfaction in that regard.

You are clearly happy to be forced to spend considerable sums in order to keep software you bought with a specific understanding working; many are not and cannot and the attempt to make them do so is morally wrong - that is not whinging it's pointing out an injustice.

A joke for you:

How do you milk sheep?

Release a new iPhone.

I have an iPhone 6+ (the large model) and the 'new version' of Wikicamps works beautifully on it. I keep the iPhone updated when the settings menu alerts me to a waiting update. I also have an old iPAD mini 2, and the new version of Wickicamps works great on that too.

Updating software regularly is certainly part of the secret Pariss, we have quite a bit of older software running on a number of devices without any problems, even run Windows Office 2007(no longer supported) mainly Outlook, Word and Excel, Outlook 2007 is without doubt  the best email account I have used and still runs without any issues.smile

What annoys me is that the new update doesn't work on windows 8.1 so that buggers me using it any more

----------------------------------

So why don't you do the FREE upgrade to Windows 10.

So long as you have a genuine copy of Windows 7 or 8.1 (9) you can have 10 at no charge

YES it is still free. Microsoft just removed those old annoying pop-ups telling you to upgrade to 10.

Go here https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10

Click the blue button Download tool now to download and save the (current version 1903) MediaCreationTool1903.exe under the heading Create Windows 10 installation media

After the download has completed, run/open that file, and choose upgrade this PC.

Turn off sleep in the power settings and Windows 10 (approx. 3.5GB in size) will download and then upgrade your old windows for free whilst keeping all your apps and files.

If you are asked at any point to enter in a product key (serial number) just choose to skip that step by clicking "I don't have one" and the install will continue for free.

Don't do the upgrade unless you have a proper broadband internet connection. If you are on a cheapy mobile internet plan you will possibly use up all your data allowance.

Upgrading a Win7 or Win8 machine to Win10 is a potential recipe for disaster. These machine will be past their useby date in most cases unless they were highly specced when new. It will get you running apps that you can't run now but it's likely to be very slow and annoying. Save your bookies and buy a new modern computer. Don't cheap out and buy a low spec machine if you can help it, or you will just hasten the time to upgrade again.

>So why don't you do the FREE upgrade to Windows 10.

Last year I bought a new, high spec, notebook with W10 installed. I took it home turned it on and it said "Would you like to install updates?". Given that I had a fibre-to-the-home NBN connection I thought "Why not" and hit the "Yes" button. It took the damn thing 22 hours before it finished!

Since then W10 has tried, without asking, to update itself and myriad other software whenever it smells an internet connection, indeed it grabbed 2GB of my mobile plan before I realised. On the W10 "Home" edition automatic upgrades cannot be turned off however it is possible to mark a particular internet connection as "Metered" and this stops W10 doing about 98% of the updates it would like to.

To set as "Metered":

Main menu

Settings

Network and internet

Change connection properties

Set as metered connection

NB. This *only* applies to the current connection so if you wish to set your mobile hot spot as the metered connection you must be using it as such at the time.
