Maybe this is better suited to Techies Cnr.. here goes.. Was looking at the VMS700HD and can only see main reviews from Supplier. I guess these are on sellers so I reckon they will sprook up their product. Has anyone had good or bad or suspect views on them. I want to use on main Hyws and Offroad as well. Some reviews I have found ( and very limited ) say these are ok. Not too convinced as yet. Yes a Hema is the option but bit expensive and no not too interested on the OZMap deals. Yes I always carry paper maps as part of my kit. Phillip
Have had one for approx 8 years, never put a foot wrong on or off roads, other than new freeway, or road changes. but that,s only because i haven,t updated maps. also have reverse camera,s hooked to it, ( one on ute one on van, work great. very happy with it. Just send card tothem for map updates, don,t always charge for it. (don,t know why)
The main reason I do not use a brand name map tablet is that you are stuck with the brand you bought and you have to live with their short comings. There are many map apps in the market that, in combination, give you a better solution. I use a Samsung android tablet with ExploreOz, Memory Map (loaded with all the Hema maps), WikiCamps and Google Maps. At the moment I am also evaluating OSMand on a trip to the Flinders ranges. With those apps I have all the information I need wherever I go. Oh, I almost forgot. I also have Bookings.com in case I need a room.
We use a VMS700HDX and it's never put a foot wrong. Sure, it has some quirks such as being able to drive off a map but for us it does the job very nicely. It even recognised the Hamilton Downs Youth Camp road as well as other Hamilton Downs Station tracks. The road doesn't appear on any of the other mapping software that we have although it is on our paper maps.
Having said that we always have the relevant paper maps with us - the paper weapon of choice are the WAC maps (1:1,000,000).
The satellite data in google maps has been updated since we were there and the maps are drawn from that. The container at the north end was only put there just before we left in July 2018. It seems that a lot of the station tracks now appear too although the street maps in the VMS GPS had them in mid 2018.
