there was some hype about the Bruce around Cooroy mainly generated by Claytons towing ( i think to generate advertising for them ) . dont let it worry you just drive to the conditions .I think if you got some statistics you would find that caravan rollovers actually account for a very small percentage of accidents, just hype by parties with a vested interest .
Not long back home from a trip which included the Bruce from one end to the other.
I have been on far worse roads and quite frankly couldn't see what all the hype was about.
I think it amounts to inattention, not driving to the conditions and generally just Muppet drivers of whom I saw a lot of.
There were 4 accidents that I came across whilst traversing the Bruce, all on 4 lane straight sections of highway. Go figure.
I.M.H.O. - We have travelled the section Sunny Coast to the region below the NSW border a few times. We notice the road in several spots is quite high above the surrounding terrain and in places has a severely angle drop off from quite a narrow verge.
We wonder if inexperience is a big problem when van rigs get buffeted by larger passing vehicles and when surprised by the passing of a larger vehicle (or vice versa) the van rig drivers over react to the air pressure wave coming from the front of the other vehicle with a swerve to the left or right (yep it falls away to either side) and then find they are not on level ground and topple over further.
Been towing current rig for 13-14 years now and a larger, but lighter one on and off for the 14 years before that and still find we are on totally FULL alert when in the area discussed.
It is scary and one has to be 100% cool and calm and alert no matter what.

Also the older I get the more I realise I do not know.
Having driven down the Bruce Highway from the top end, I was happy to get down past Cooroy now.The highway has changed from single lane to a double lane highway each way.
Much nicer now that the traffic and trucks can pass if they wish.
With the proper highway here, it is hard to imagine why vans have come unstuck. Better wider straighter road, may attract higher speeds?

Did the road from Maryborough to Cairns during July and August. Apart from some roadworks, more at the south end of the section we did, it was no worse in general than other major roads, and in a lot of instances better.
I wont speculate on accident causes, but I would travel this road happily anytime.

You are probably referring to the place where at least 2 vans have come unstuck (although depending on who comments, there may have been more). It's southbound after the traffic from Cooroy merges with the highway. There's a steepish downhill run at 110 kph at just at the bottom the's an almost unnoticeable dip. Barely noticeable in a well sorted car, but towing an unbalanced van in windy conditions may cause some issues. Have to remember that that section of the highway would see tens of thousands of vans a year, so maybe some perspective needed.
