Melbourne to Perth via Nullabor

Hi all,

We are planning to leave early September using a Toyota Landcruiser to tow a 24ft Multi Terrain Caravan from Melbourne to Perth. Itd be great to get some hints on places to stay and see along the way. We are self contained and would like to free camp as much as we can.

Also any advice on crossing the Nullarbor would be appreciated.

thanks

Fair bit to see across the Nullabor. Eyre peninsula is worth the visit. Take the long way to Perth and go to Esperance and follow the south coast right around. Lots of wonderful spots there. Driving the Nullabor these days is a bit of a doddle really. Roadhouses every 200 ks maximum and a very good highway. Lots of traffic so you are not out there alone. I have forgotten how many times I have done the trip but still enjoy it. Pretty good free camps at a few spots on the WA side. Cheapest fuel past Nundroo is at Eucla and Mundrabilla. Although its all pretty dear out there. Put the Fuel Maps app on your phone. Very handy finding the cheapest fuel. Make sure your water tanks are full before leaving Ceduna as you will not get any from Ceduna to Norseman. The roadhouses are short of water most of the time so will not let you fill your tanks. Have a great trip and enjoy WA.

There are plenty of free camping in the south west coast from Albany to just before Bremer bay . Bremer bay to Esperance there are low cost camps in national parks or bush camps plenty of free camping along the highway to Norseman and the Nullarbor and heaps of spots along the bight once you get close to the coast. Eyre peninsula has lots of free camping inland but the coastal camps will ask for a donation but there are some freebies if you use wiki camps same with York and fluereo peninsula right through the border of Victoria . Very hard to find free camps on the great ocean road through to Melbourne enjoy your trip it is definitely one to do

Welcome to the gang Debra, enjoy here and out in the playground.

You are in for a treat and I second using 'Wikicamps'. Being a full time GN I use it a lot but make sure you read many reviews for each location you look at not just the first couple, then check out the pics, you are then ready to make your choice if you use that spot or find another.

The most important thing to remember though is,

Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

Hi Mrs P,

My wife and I drove from Perth to Sydney early September last year via Kalgoorlie, Nullabor, Great Ocean Road and coastal to Sydney.  The best road of all was the Nullabor section as it is so smooth.  There is a 146K straight, no bends at all and three aircraft runways on the road at various locations.  Fuel is a bit more expensive though well worth the trip.  There is so much to see.  At Head of Bight you can see the wales just offshore with their calves.  Roadhouses are great.  Whether you are into golf or not (we had never played in our life), you should do the Nullabor Links. http://www.nullarborlinks.com/ This is the longest golf course in the world.  It is 1,365 kilometers from Hole 1 to Hole 18.  You pick up your score card at Ceduna Visitors Centre and get your certificate at the Kalgoorlie Visitors Centre.  The Roadhouses and other places will stamp your playing card as you go.

It is such a great drive.

Kevin

A Great Road Trip, take your time and enjoy it.

As stated, water is scarce once you leave Ceduna, phone (Telstra) is ok around 25 k each side of the Roadhouses, watch for roos from Madura to Caiguna, especially after some rain as they are all by the roadside for a drink.

Also, watch out for the fruit and veg gestapo at the border, can have bad days and make life difficult, all cooked veg is ok. A few dump points WA side, check Wikicamps, none on the SA side they just send it over to us.

5 million star camp spots on the cliffs, make sure you drive in to get a photo.

Cheers Bob

Headed west a couple of weeks ago. Had -1°C 250km east of Norseman in the morning & ice on the car. It is a nice drive, took it slowly, walked up an escapement west of Eucla. Eat all your fruit, vegetables & honey before you get to the WA border. Likewise if you are coming back the same way through Ceduna. A wire mesh sunscreen on the inside of driver's side window heading west to reduce heat is worthwhile, passenger side heading east. There are plenty of places to stop.

Bringing back the memories. We went over in 2015. Like someone else has already said, if you have fruit and vegies cook them before the inspection block. Honey is a no-no. Also if storing things in cardboard boxes don't use fruit boxes although when we went across they swapped the one we had for a different box. We also had an empty potato bag and chicken feed pellet bag that was taken. Hubby used these for kneeling on if he had to change a flat tyre. There are some designated camping areas but we just pulled over towards the cliffs somewhere suitable but back a bit. Enjoy.

WikiCamps is your friend with plenty of great free camps and places to stay. The burgers at ****lebiddy are fantastic. A question for the admins why does ****lebiddy get starred out? Its ridiculous. Its the name of a town for gods sake.
