Great Australian Bakeries

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh - my favourite shop - a country bakery! Especially around 9.30am to 1pm

I'm a connoisseur of pies, pasties, sausage rolls & nice sweet things made at bakeries! See below & these are my choices, other members may have other places listed.

Before early this year when we went to Warrnambool, I thought Cobb's Bakery at Pt Fairy was the best pie maker in Australia but discovered better scallop pies across the road. The bakeries in Warrnambool are delightful too.

Best pasties - Phalen's Bakery at Ayr, North Qld.

Best bacon & cheese sausage rolls - Castlemaine, Victoria (you have to get them before 10am or you'll be miss out!).

There's a cafe that for us is a "Must Stop" between Texas in Qld & Barraba in NSW - Bingara. The pies are hand made with left overs from the previous day eg corned beef, curried chicken, chunk beef, etc. I always take a few frozen ones on to Toowoomba if we are heading north. The bakery next door doesn't make as good a job.

Best lunch stops - bakery-café; the "Beechworth" name is a bit over rated & have too many buses stopping but they still have good tucker; Holbrook, NSW is good & well worth the stop.

Hey Joe, you're stealing my thunder! What are you doing up in Nth Qld? I'd love to be at Farina when it's open.

When we lived at Ceduna, there was nothing like walking down East Tce on the way to work & smelling the fresh bread being baked.

Doug, remind me to tell you of our competition as to who baked the best vanilla slice in the Warrnambool area. I know you were after custard tarts.

Olive, are you just being antagonistic lately? Most small towns that we visit all over Australia have their bakery. There might be a PO, a Police Station, a pub & a bakery - what more do you want?

One of my favourite passtimes when travelling I going to bakeries. kandanga shop qld sells homemade pies. Every time we go there we buy pies and go back to our caravan, add vegies and gravy. And a wine. Yummo. I just about love everything a bakery sells.

Grey Nomad's- you are doing a great job listing these bakeries. Are you listening Olive? Get out there man (or woman) and give them a go. I went to an absolute ripper today at Red Hill Victoria. Their products (baked on the premises) were sensational. Grey Nomad's, don't rest on your laurels; give dear old Olive a few more to choose from. And Olive, when you have been to any (yes ANY) of these listed bakeries, please give us your valued opinion. If you cannot find one listed in the area that you are travelling, please let us know where you are and the Grey Nomad Army will help you find a gem.

In a lot of country towns these days many bakeries don't bake anything. They are really just a cafe.

Not sure why people are getting stuck in to Olive Oil, she is absolutely correct, most small country towns nowadays don't have a bakery, simply resellers of prepackaged mass produced stuff, there are exceptions, however good bakeries are pretty thin on the ground.wink

Has anybody tried Wycheproof Bakery in Victoria? Wycheproof is a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. Rumor has it that the bakery is owned by 4 locals and was started to create jobs in the town. I hear that they bake some terrific stuff. Anyone been there?

Some great bakeries in Western Victoria, seems like the vanilla slice crown is hotly contested.smile

Just home from another trip north. Our pie tasting continues. The Finley Bakery, NSW is now the top of our list, pasties are also a must. RV parking for all size vehicles is available on the opposite side of the road. A bakery worthy of a special mention is the Nanango Bakery, NSW, in the main street. This bakery is located in an old style cafe with back to back seating and large array of pastry and as clean as a whistle.

I am also a fan of a good pie and on our travels we have probably visited at least half of the ones that people have listed in this post. I have even frequented a number of the bakeries in France when I was working over there but I found that those guys weren't so much into savoury pies but were more expert in baking breads, croissants and sweeter pastries such as chocolate bread..In my opinion a pie can be excellent on one visit then the next time you drop in they can be mediocre such as at Trappers or the bakery cafe in the main street of Merriwa - I think it's got a lot to do with turnover and the time of day that you get there. I just got back from a few months in South Africa where I was a regular customer of the King Pie company franchises, I loved their chicken peri peri, mutton peri peri and mutton curry pies.

Cheers
