Great Central Road / Outback Way


Anyone travelled on the Great Central Road / Outback Way road in the last week or planning to do it sometime this month?  Thinking of doing it from WA to NT but have read that the road is not suitable for full height vans!

Hi Treecrest,
We traveled along it from Ayers Rock back to WA. We towed a poptop Jayco Expanda with no problems. There were full height vans on the road.
Towing speed all the way was around 80kmh, even the fabled NT section. Travel to the spped the road dictates

 I have travelled it a few times towing my Avan Cruiseliner. Sorry not to have any more recent info.  Last time 2017 is was a really good road. NT section about 195+ Klm's was still the same RED Sand and a bit corrugated but not severe, and no problem. WA section was really good at that time. Saw a few  Full size caravans on the road.  One with some Brake drum issues was stopped with another two big vans. 

Dust can be excessive and does get everywhere. 

The travel permits are obtainable online. 

Try doing a seach online for GCR road Conditions also the Wiki Camps "Forum" you might find people who  have just been over the Road this week.

Lovely scenery out there.

I don't think full height is the issue. It is more a matter of whether your van underpinnings and interior construction are strong enough to cope with many kms of corrugations, if you don't happen to luck it soon after the graders have been through.

Lots of full height vans go along it, the road is wide and no low overhangs which is what would stop full height or width vans. The issue is simply how the van construction handles long stretches of corrugation and if you have sufficient underbody protection from stones thrown up, similar to most gravel/dirt roads.

Road trains travel it so you wouldn't have any trouble with heights.
Just make sure all your underbody plumbing is protected from stones.
Some people use noodles to cover pipes and aluminium angle for front tap
on drawbar. Lower tyre pressures and drive to conditions.
Another thing if you have rear window cover it with cardboard saves it from
rebounding stones.
I haven't travelled it since 2010 so can't help out with road conditions.
