Half lap for newbies.

Planning our first big trip with a 3 month limit as a lead in to ultimate retirement where time wont be an issue. Does 30 days Melbourne-Mildura-Port Augusta-Coober Pedy-Alice Springs-Tennant Creek-Katherine sound do-able?

* Dry season

*21 ft semi-offroad (?) caravan on major roads.

*200-300 kms/day

*max 3 overnight stops between 2+ day stops

Return Katherine-Tennant Creek-Cloncurry-Normanton-Cairns-Airlie Beach-Yepoon-Hervey Bay-Coolangatta-Coffs Harbour-Wollongong-Batemans Bay-Wagga Wagga-Tocumwal-Melbourne. 60 days

We would  appreciate some experienced views.

Cannot wait for the day we can head off with no time limits!

Three months plenty of time for a look and run trip. There are some places you will want to do more mileages sometimes you may only want to do 50klms before camping again. Ensure you download WikiCamps on you device also use Camps 10 to plan trip.

We did  full "lap" in 13 weeks with an i30 and bitumen only caravan. But we are tge type that a/ dont even go on dirt roads and b/ we dont care if we miss some sites as we'll see them next time. Also National park are out as we have a small dog.

Based on the above you'll have enough time

Enjoy.

With that sort of time frame, it will not be a thorough explore of all that these parts have to offer.
I guess I differ from those who enjoy frequently moving on, and find it frustrating not to be able to at least enjoy some areas in a bit of depth.
Thus, I would suggest not going north of Tennant Creek, but turning east there, and coming back to Melbourne via Cloncurry, Winton, Longreach, Barcaldine and south from there through Charleville, Bourke, Cobar, Griffith. This confines the trip to inland parts, but would enable you to spend a bit of time exploring Central Australia, and also seeing some of the very different offerings of the Qld inland.

Thanks for the all the great advice. Possum 3 - Wikicamps got us to this early plan stage. Will check out Camps 10 for more detail. Im with Eaglemax in see-it-next-time approach. Hear you too Wendyy but will keep central Qld for see-it-next-time. Intend spending lots of time on Qld coast so intend using outback as a safe haven during school holiday invasions! Yes Olive Oil - albeit with a few butterflies!!
