Buying vehicle interstate

We are considering buying the wife's brother's car as he has ceased to drive anymore-his car is in NSW (Gosford) and we live in Qld (Sunshine Coast). Has anyone done similar recently as I am very out of touch with these matters nowadays. What sort of costs and procedures are involved. The vehicle is in very good condition and the registration has a further 5mths to run. I guess I could drive it home on existing Rego and Insurance. Any thoughts hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.        Regards Tony

Drive it home on the existing rego & 3rd PP insurance (with the owner's permission) after signing the transfer of ownership documents. Check that the comprehensive insurance is still in effect, or take out your own first.
Then contact your local Rego authorities to transfer it to your ownership and rego. It may need a local inspection.
Cheers,
Peter

Drive it back to Qld on it's current rego.
When in Qld you will need to obtain a RWC certificate and surrender the existing NSW plates.
You will pay stamp duty on the purchase price of the vehicle. TMR will then issue new Qld rego and plates.

Hi Tony smile

Two years ago I did buy a car in Vic and drove it back to NSW. It was as described in the add and emails, so we agreed on a price which included keeping the rego to drive it home until I promptly transferred the registration to ourselves in NSW and return the remaining Vic rego to her. I did arrange my own insurance over the phone before leaving. We also agreed in writing to pay any bookings or other 'expenses' that we may incure after the sale.no

We had a slow trip back, sight seeing, stopping a few nights here and there and looked at a bit of snow in the mountains etc. No problems, no bookings ! When we got back I had the car inspected by a authorised inspection station, did the paper work, paid the tax and handed the old plates in to the NSW rego office when I got the new plates. No hassles. I notified the seller that it had been done by email and it was finished and the plates were handed back so she could claim the refund for time left. hmm

Seeing as you are dealing with a family member you may choose to agree to do things a bit less formally and make it easier for yourselves. You may choose to use the existing rego till it runs out before changing it over to Qld and in your name. biggrin
