Define ' comfortable ' We've packed up the family van at xmas at W'bool and driven back home a number of times along it for a change, Been home in central vic for tea, Coach tours do the return trip in a day, I think one night stop somewhere is plenty but that is jmho, It can be a challenging drive given the number of international tourists who flock to it and decide to just stop to take a pic but that happens everywhere too Really depends on how much time you've got

Well back in the 70s the great ocean road was a little different to what it is now, speed limits most of it about 60 ks.
Back in the day, Sunday ride, along the straight bits we would pull 100 mph and it got real scary when the odd car would come around a corner from the other way, we would be really cranked over.
Wouldn't dream of scrapping the pegs and exhaust now, stay upright stay alive.
It's a hell of a busy road now , any time of year.

Did it a couple of years ago. Very busy, about 800 tourists around 12 Apostles. We did it in a day & got out of there. Don't bother going to Otway lighthouse, expensive & a waste of valuable time if you need to get on. Plenty of other lighthouses in the country.

From a glass half full perspective: Sure you can get a glimpse in a day by touching 1 or 2 spots, or you can make a memorable holiday out of it. Many will hit the 12 Apostles, or Lorne or similar and think they've 'done' the GOR. In reality there's heaps to see and plenty of tourist info online. Take in the Bellarine Peninsula if you have time and from Queenscliff head to Torquay where the GOR goes all the way to Port Fairy. PF itself is easily worth a day or two. Depends whether you're in holiday mode or ticking places off your list as you whizz through, but you could easily soak up several days to a week in the region if you take a comfortable approach. It's just under 300km from Torquay, about 360km from Queenscliff. As others have said, it's not a fast road.

Southern Comfort, A great liquid refreshment, Also the boat l should have really bought... But l digress.... A minor note re Port Fairy... It ain't actually on the GOR, I'd say the local chamber of commerce or the moyne shire tries every now and then to throw their hat into the GOR tourist marketing hype and hope no one notices or even could be bothered correcting their sneakiness in trying to attract high yield participants to visit and spend some coin in the joint...

Well done for grabbing the bait, I wondered how long it would take! Fully aware that GOR technically finishes at Allandale, but to miss the extra few k's to have a look at PF would be a great shame. Why, oh why do these pointless technicalities matter to some people? Just get out there and see it as a region.

So you deliberately put up the wrong information just to annoy people and then attack that person for politely correcting your mistake? Do you do that a lot? Goodonya

I have travelled the Great ocean road approx 12 months ago and would suggest to take your time and do it in 2 or 3 days. it is well worth it and stop at the museum that gives the history of the road.

I would also plan your toilet stops, if you are not self contained

Up until about two yearas ago, all the roadside carparks to sightsee from, apart from the 12 Apostles which has a cafe

There were no toilets

I wonder what the overseas tourists think of us

Very welcome Chris. Another quick thought - as well as the GOR itself, the region incorporates the Shipwreck Coast which runs between Cape Otway and Port Fairy. Much history down there, in fact all the way along to Portland, should you have time.

We are currently en-route to the GOR if it doesn't get too cold or rainy over the next 3 or 4 weeks.  Sitting at Narrabeen Lakes in Sydney at the moment & off to the RN Show tomorrow.

In the past we have stayed at Warnambool and did the western side & then across the Princess Highway to Queenscliffe & did the Eastern loop from there. Another time we stayed at Colac & did both loops from there.  On every occasion we left the van & did the loops in the Patrol.

This time we intend to stay somewhere on the GOR (Port Campbell perhaps) & look at the 'attractions' either early in the morning before the hordes of tourists or in the afternoon after they have left on the tour buses.

In any case we have lots of cold weather clothing packed away & certainly won't be looking at the 'attractions' with the van in tow.

Glorious here tonight in Sydney except that the bloody Broncos got beaten again!!!

Hi Christop,
We have currently just left the Ocean Rd, we are now at a little C/park reserve just south of Warrnabool, today is i guess reasonable weather for this neck of the woods, the following are my very own personal thoughts:

Time frame from start to finish approx 5 hours ! the "sights" do NOT cater for caravans, & parking area's, the whole set up is just grabbing the Asian dollar ! we called to view Otway lighthouse [Historical site]
$40 entrance fee, didn't even bother to check concessions, yes understand that there is an upkeep cost, but really $40 !!

If you like coffee latte's every stop, then that's the place you would love. I believe its now just an "Icon" drive unlike the 70's i guess.
On the way here we stopped on Phillip Is [Cowes] went to Fairy penguins parade, again Asian Dollar grab, best seats $55, not sure of concessions, we saw around 20 penguins, well we would have done with infer-red night vision glasses.
IMHO, the drive from Cairns to Cooktown is way more spectacular
Not trying to put you off in anyway as we are all different, would i do it again ------No Way !!!!!
Not really sorry for my negative reply though just saying how I see it

Wasn't negative at all, Just honest... Some international tourists have been underwhelmed by the experience, specially given the marketing hype... Seems today it's all about bleeding folk dry, Went through it for the first time in the 60's.
