Planning on touring Tasmania late December and January. What would you suggest about needing to book power van sites ? owing to summer holiday period or can you just roll up and get a site.
We were there 4yrs ago we never booked any sites we got arived on the Australia day weekend We were told on the boat that it would be busy on the east coast,so we did the north west coast first and only had one park that was booked out a couple of weeks later in Hobart but just went to the next one. We went to the big 4 at Bicheno only to find out that they only do cabins and not powered sites so the went to the other park there. We spent about 3 weeks there but next time we will stay longer
Come back mid Feb after spending 8 weeks in Tassie. Our advice is have your trip worked out as the parks are very heavily booked during the holiday period. That's when Tasmanians all go on holidays and a lot of places are either full or you end up with a crap site if there are any left. Free camping they also like to tie them up also. We found most chock a block,. In Tassie you are only 2 to 3 hrs from anywhere and they take their vans to these free camps and because most are only a few bucks a night they put their van there, Mum stays for a couple of nights, then Dad, then the kids and then whole family. Make sure you book van parks in advance

Yep, l think it's really, really mean of
most working Tasmanian's to have Xmas holidays at Xmas,
Like the rest of Australia does...
Anygee, the ballot system may favor us but that's coz we are here at the time...
Gotta be in it to win it too...
The really popular spots need a ballot system to be fair to everyone but there are plenty of other free or gold coin donation camps around the joint...
Cheers
Had 4 months in Tassie Dec15 to Apr16. No problems, had to wait for free camps on East coast. As mentioned maybe do West and North coasts first. Ws did it this way.

A couple of weeks ago a free camp was sort of full. Sloping ground was free, not really good, looking over to Freycinet NP. I found somewhere else as I sleep in the car.

The thing we found was that some parks were fully booked out not only because it was holiday season but due to events that were happening at the time. We just spent most of February on the island and luckily we had the heads up from a mate who lives there that we may want to prebook as the Targa Rally was on up north as well as some big yacht race and a concert happening in Hobart. I suggest that you also look at the events calendar around the time that you are planning on going as we found it difficult in a couple of places to get in even though it was a couple of months in advance.
