North Pole sunset

This is the sunset at the North Pole with the moon at its closest point last week   .

A     scene you will probably never get to see in person,

And, you also see the     sun     below the     moon   ,

An     amazing photo and not one easily duplicated.

How can the Sun and a Crescent Moon be seen in the same view? I'm certainly no astronomer but I thought the crescent was the Earth's shadow on the Moon, which would mean the Sun would be behind the Earth ie Earth and Moon on opposite sides of the Earth.

Geez, you guys are Sceptics, probably don't believe in UFO's either.

Of course it's real, it's Sunset and they have days 6 months long, the moon comes out every night, the sun is shining from behind and just the bottom crescent is just visible, the sun is in perspective so it looks closer.

Next you'll tell me the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny are not REAL. disbeliefnobiggrin

Cheers Bob

Fake Winter Solstice Image is Fake. But Cool.

Editor Note: We originally wrote this article back in 2008, but Ive decided to pull it back out and share it again because this PHOTO WILL NOT DIE! Its a beautiful image by Inga Nielsen, but its not real. Fraser

Has this image been showing up in your email inbox, forwarded on from excited friends? Along with it may be the following words: This is the sunset at the North Pole with the moon at its closest point. And you can also see the sun below the moon. An amazing photo and one not easily duplicated. You may want to save this and pass it on to others. It is a beautiful picture, but is it a real photo?

Even though this image was even featured on the iconic Astronomy Picture of the Day

Here is a real one, taken at Nordcapp (North Cape) in Norway, which is the furthest north that it is possible to drive anywhere in the world.
It was taken at 3 minutes after midnight.
It messes with your mind because when the sun is lowest, as in the pic, it is to the north, not the west.

I had a friend in High school back in the UK in the late 60's. They drove from the French channel ports up to Nordcap in old Landrovers. Took about thirty ferry crossings to get there.

Now with the Atlantic Way it can be driven all the way by road..

I have one of those mad bucket list dreams to drive from Gibraltar up through Spain into France across that "Bridge in the Clouds" in Southern France up to Nordkap just to watch that spectacle..

Pie in the sky but it would be a helluva drive.
