Distance calculator, Globalfeed, is an excellent website to find and plan routes for travel ...

Welcome to the gang Denise, enjoy here and out in the playground.

You could go a so called quick way but some bends and hilly country to travel though....Dubbo, Goulburn, Nerriga, Braidwood-Turpentine rd to Sussex Inlet, OR

Maybe a little quicker but a section to be careful on....Dubbo, M31 to Mossvale (Now the hilly bit) then down to Nowra and on to Sussex Inlet. Me, I would probably take that way.

Keep safe on the roads and out there.

We have a base camp at Peak Hill.

AND

Regularly go the following way to the South Coast.

Parkes, Eugowra, Gooloogong, Cowra, Boorowa, Hume Hwy to Canberra, at Murrumbateman just outside the town centre, turn left on the Murrumbateman Road heading in the direction of Gundaroo, but turn right at t section then the next left on to Shingle Hill Way that brings you to Federal Highway, you need to turn right on to the Federal Hwy then about 300/400 meters turn left on the Bungendore Road, to Bungendore then to=take the Tarrago Road to Nerriga which will take you through to the turn which will be Turptine Rd that brings you out on the Princes Highway.

We tow 3ton of Outback Jayco with Cruiser and it is a breeze if you follow the designated speed signs.

Check out "Mr Google"

Hi Knight,

For the ignorant, like me, could you explain why Global Feed is better than Google maps please.

Thanks

If you come down the M31 - aka Hume Hwy - then instead of the Moss Vale exit mentioned by Dougwe suggest you take the Picton/Wilton exit about 30kms earlier. Turn towards Wollongong, then go down Mount Ousley. The Mt Ousley road while steep is almost straight, six lanes wide with a 80km/h speed limit. At the bottom it becomes a freeway to just north of Nowra with a break of something like 5kms going through Albion Park Rail.

(What Dougwe didn't mention is that the descent from Moss Vale/Robertson down to Albion Park is through Macquarie Pass - the steepest and most winding road down the Great Dividing Range I have come across.)

Of course, from Moss Vale you could also go through Kangaroo Valley - the descent down isn't too bad for us used to this part of NSW, but the climb up out of the valley is very narrow and winding. Then you have to go down the other side which is just as bad. At the bottom the road is level and joins the Princes Hwy just north of Nowra.

The other way suggested by JohnR is OK. From Tarago the road goes through mostly level country although it seems to wander all over the place with no special features; at times you will think you are lost! At Nerriga there is a typical country hotel, stop there for rest. Leaving Nerriga there is one steepish climb which is thankfully short.

If you miss the Turpentine Road turnoff - and I have the three times I have been that way! - keep going and either turn off at the Technology Park which is clearly signposted. Or when you go past the Navy base airfield, turn right at the 'T' then 100 metres or so turn left. 5kms from there you reach the Princes Hwy.

depending on your confidence I would avoid Macquarie pass about 10 klm of pretty tight/steep road an the there is no real difference in time by going picton rd which is much easier. if there is an incident on the Macquarie pass route you could be delayed a long time

Oooops, sorry all, Uncle Al must have got up earlier than me yesterday as Picton road is what I thought I was talking about. I got confused between Wollongong and Nowra.

I'll beat that bugga yet (Uncle Al)

Take Picton Road way Denise, easy peasy. Just take ya time down the hill.

As Dougwe says - take your time going down Mt Ousley. Not sure how long the descent is, could be five kilometres so use your gears to reduce speed rather than brakes which could overheat very quickly.

I might add that loaded coal trucks towing trailers use the left lane - they are restricted to 40km/h and they certainly use their gears to maintain the slow speed. Makes towing a caravan down look easy.

Murray

PS: I'm a Ranger man as well. I generally go down hills such as Mt Ousley, Brown Mountain or the Clyde in 3rd, on occasion even down to 2nd for real tight slow bends. Just need the occasional touch on the brakes. I once took a camper trailer down Macquarie Pass but have not been game to try it with our 21ft van!
