Gday...

I guess we all have those moments when our concentration lapses. hmm

Cheers - John

Yes, one mistake and off you go. But if you were a banker making money off the deceased?

Dynon road is another.  About time they had flashing warning signs.

What is it with that bridge has anyone got any theories ? ? can the bridge be seen easly if you have your sun visor down? maybe Doug's twins are showing a bit of leg beside the road and distracting drivers. Surely there must be a reason.

When we are traveling with fuel on the roof I put a sticker on the inside of the windscreen with the height of the car.

Gday...

Yep, basic common sense Jonathan.

I have the height of the vehicle as well as the height of the van on the windscreen all the time.

It has been there for the 10 years I have been on the road. I definitely would NEVER assume I could remember those numbers whenever I might approach a bridge etc with 'height restrictions'.

I think this motorhome that hit the bridge today is a 'rental' so the 'tourist' may have only driven it for a few Km.

I am good at making excuses.

cheers - John

I first found that bridge in 1971 on my first load out of Newcastle to Melbourne, lucky I was unloaded and just fitted under with the semi trailer I was driving, what an eye opener that was.

Since then I could write a couple of chapters of a book on getting loads under and though tight situations, not guilty of hitting any low bridges.

Most of the low bridges have gone now, shame about that one.

It's not about failing to see the bridge, it's the grey matter forgetting what you're driving! Same thing happens with bikes mounted on a car roofs, they get wiped off regularly when entering low roof car parks.

As for the infamous bridge, many have proposed digging a trench and lowering the road surface, same as they've done to put roads under railway crossings in many suburbs.

Noticed that the driver looked Asian and the motor home is a rental.

Firstly I was wondering if the rental company gives a detailed briefing on the height of the rig?

Secondly does the driver understand signs in English?

I know I will be howled down for this but maybe an addition to the signs already there could be the information written in Chinese as well.

When travelling overseas I notice a lot of signs in dual language, thank goodness.

Many years ago I used to travel a dead straight Road near Telford in the UK. There was a railway bridge over the road. As you were driving towards it it started to be a worry. It looked to be about six feet high. As you got closer the road dropped ten feet or so and there was no height sign on the bridge which meant it was sixteen feet clearance.

One winter driving towards the bridge there was a Pantech stuck under the bridge.

All traffic stopped. Police breakdown truck The works.

Turned out there had been a burst watermain and the road was flooded. Froze overnight  and the bridge was then 12' height. Must have been hell of a shock to the driver.

A few such signs are now appearing on the Great Ocean Road where visiting Chinese drivers regularly create serious havoc. The locals are even making and erecting home made signs in Mandarin. It would be a massive undertaking to do this in multiple languages everywhere. Until the bridge height or road level is adjusted, Montague Street will continue to claim victims for the reasons I mentioned earlier.
