travelling round tas so many spots say sc, but bp still pull in and ignore the rules, i admit I haven't had any problems but seen their litterblowing round their area and urinating round their camp. My point is why make these rules if you dont enforce them. It is so frustrating as eventually they'll just close the sites off.
Many backpackers are overseas tourists and if a fine is issued they disregard it as there is no consequence of failure to pay. Even if they purchase a vehicle whilst here it is sold on when they leave. It is only vehicles that are hired that have consequences as the hire companies ensure all fines and penalties are paid prior to tourist leaving the Country.

In my opinion they are mostly ill-equipped and don't want to spend money to become equipped. For instance, you see thousands of young travellers in their vans etc at camps and roadside stops all over the country, places without facilities, how many of them have a simple shovel to be able to bury their waste? No wonder we see the paper and human waste within two or three steps of the parking areas. I agree Mezza, this is another group who will stuff it up for the majority of good people.

Annoying when the answers to such issues are easy. Eg Upon entry to Oz they are given a talk of how to behave here including waste disposal. That a National fines list is compiled to include all fines issued, local Govt, State etc and they cannot leave the country until they are paid (or relevant jail time), More signs up so there is zero excuse and hire vans equipped with fixed potti units by law (or even a shovel supplied in the van).
That's off the top of my head but we seem like suckers here.

some of the most disgusting people I have seen on my travels are true blue aussies, young and old. If we set an example it would be a good start. We are too quick to blame overseas visitors, so easy to do.. You only need to go to the ground after a major sporting event, oh I forgot, gotta blame the backpackers for that too
cheers

Yeah you're right can't blame the backpackers for that. But, I was a stall holder at a major event a few years ago and I said to one of the organizers that there didn't seem to be enough bins about the place. His reply was: We factor in the clean up into the price of the tickets.

Blaze,
Disgusting people of all races, yes including aussies, however the topic was about backpackers, I don't believe we were "too quick" to blame overseas visitors. Backpackers - that's what people responded to.

And the point I make vince56 is people in big arse rigs worth $150 to $200 thousand are some times also pigs, just as bad, every bit as bad as backpackers. Not saying its people on this site but they are many. Take a unshuttered look
The great numbers of backpackers flocking to the free camps, crowding out parking areas and parking up illegally has become a problem. The councils have taken the easy way out and closed the free camps.

And the point I make Blaze is that the topic is backpackers, not big rig owners, not sporting events. I have no "shutters", just sticking to the topic!

G'day Mezza The 2014 report into "The Economics of Free-Camping Travellers" ISBN: 978-0-9945527-0-9 had a chapter with suggestions for local government with respect to backpackers. Part of the report's suggestions were to stop locking up ALL toilet blocks at night, and on the outskirts of towns at sporting ovals with car parking space alongside the toilet blocks, to a) leave the toilets unlocked, b) advertise via wikicamps their existance, and c) install parking meters which print a ticket.
The ticket would be $10 per night, easily checked by the ranger - same as daytime checking by someone who walks past the windscreens This would bring council some revenue, provide backpackers with a toilet, and all being well tidy up many of the coastal problems stemming from wiz-bangs parking along ocean frontages Phil

Hmm, nice idea. Reminds me of that old adage that prostitution is always gonna happen, so might as well legalise and tax it!
