Home internet

It appears that ALL the major players are thumbing their noses at the ACCC re Internet Download speeds.

I had a month to month contract with TPG in Qld with an NBN box in the house. A 20/50mbs unlimited download speed.

Cost including a telephone line with $20 included calls. was $69. Speed was told to me at 44mbs in the peak evening times between 7pm and 11pm.

Moved to NSW Albury just before Xmas so went with TPG again

Same 20/50 mbs service and phone for $69.

I was getting bumped off numerous times and if it rains I lose connection. Phoned TPG and was told I could only get 36 mbs because that is all the infrastructure supports. But I told them you sold me a 20/50 plan unlimited data for $69

I monitored the download speeds using speed checking programs they recommend and use themselves.

I started to realise the maximum I ever got was 26mbs at 2am in the morning.

Now I have researching the NBN through the ACCC and TIO (Telecom Industry Ombudsman) I now find that the major players Telstra/Vodaphone TPG, iiNet ,Optus etc. Were warned by the ACCC in early 2017 that they have been misleading the Australian consumer by quoting unobtainable speeds. They had to give the correct information. Hasn't happened.

They were told to lift their game and also to compensate their customers.

MY offer was  a one off $10 refund, or a change to a cheaper plan with a 20 Gig data limit, Cancel my contract with no penalty or do nothing.

I have been told by the TIO to negotiate a compensation plan with TPG. To no avail. That offer is now not on the table.

It's no good going to another provider they all have the same limited infrastructure to work with. Despite offering plans with speeds they cannot supply.

YET they are ALL still offering the plans that promise much faster speeds than they can provide despite the ACCC telling them to stop.

Later on today it was announced that OPTUS has been fined by the courts $10 million for breaking the Australian Consumer Laws,  in relation to misleading consumers about internet speeds.

Just to let you know that despite the watchdog, the ACCC telling them to lift their game they continue to flout the Law to this day. Maybe the $10 million dollar fine will help but with the money involved I doubt it. $10 Million to Optus is less than.0001% of daily income.

Obviously the Grey Nomad fraternity use computers a lot to stay in contact with family and friends. Speed is probably secondary to coverage.

However to be Blatantly cheated by the big players who have been flouting the laws need to needs to be known.

Yup looked at all those before I signed up in Albury. TPG Stated a Typical Evening Peak time Download speed of 44mbs.

Yet after I complained they came back with "The infrastructure at your premises will not be able to give those speeds". Maximum I could get was 36mbs. Which doesn't happen whatever time I check even at 2am.

I can see when I switch on my WiFi that there are around thirty other WiFi modems around within range and five are TPG. So TPG telling me that they didn't know what the infrastructure could support before I signed up is rubbish

We dumped our landline recently. Now just use Hotspot on the mobile for internet access if I am using my computer. The attached is 7:30pm on my decade old computer via wifi to the mobile. The highest download is about mid to high 80 Mbps to the old computer. The highest to the mobile has been 119 Mbps.

Are you saying that you get 119mBps download on a mobile?

I was under the impression that Telstra's 4G delivered a max of 29mBps.

Back to the OP ..  My non NBN Telstra Fast Cable with a speed boost delivers 115mBps down 24/7 on the old pay TV cable.  I still have a few months before I am forced backwards to Fraudband.  Bloody Abbott & Turnbul aught to be made pay for their mismanagement & deception.  Just loosing their jobs is not enough.

It is typically around the mid 80s but sometimes quicker but this is 4G+ rather than just 4G. I don't know what the technical differences are but the phone usually gets a 4G+ signal where I am. If you do not need truck loads of data then use your phone's Hotspot. I've gone from 3 land lines (years ago) to now pre-pay $30 per 28 days (28 days is a bit of a racket, 13 times a year!) all the calls I need including overseas to where I need it all included in the $30 with 12 GB data. Using Boost which is the Telstra network, I don't need any of the movie add on stuff. Use to be with Optus.

If you don't need a lot of data why bother with a landline, you probably want a mobile anyway! The phone is a Moto G5 Plus, I wasn't prepared to pay extortion rates for an unlocked Apple or Samsung for example. Home computer is a 2009 Mac Mini, older than the dinosaurs!

What beggars belief is that the P*****s can do whatever they want and get away with it. No comeback for stuffing up things.

I have a friend who recently moved to Finland. She can download a 4K movie of an hour and a half's length in 1 min 2.45 seconds. so she reports. Small country without the mineral resources we have.

Free Uni, Childcare, medical all free.

I'll have to ask what the net costs over there.

I do use my mobile hotspot for WiFi but with my boys streaming movies etc the Data costs are prohibitive. Interesting the speeds obtained though.

I will support the use of the mobile phone as hotspot too. Recently did a speed check and my phone on 4G+ was faster than mates newly installed NBN. Telstra 49 shekels a month with 20gig of data. Very rarely do I use more than half each month.

I had 2 attempts to use TPG at home - one was prior to NBN and one after. Both were failures with drop outs or very slow response times. Switched to Spintel for NBN and response times have improved. So much so, have now bundled our service with unlimited calls and also our mobile.

Seems to be adverts. Exetel have asked me to run peak and non peak tests direct from the NBN gadget on the wall bypassing their wireless modem. Son Matt will help set my laptop up with that today.

Several weeks ago my phone Telstra would be less than the fixed wireless BUT it seems to be faster lately so maybe have upgraded as lots and lots people complaining re Telstra speeds of an evening.

My first home connection to work in the early 1980s was via a 1200 Baud acoustic coupler (Texas Instrument Silent 700). That's 0.0012 Mbps. Haven't speed changed!

To the mobile at 8:40 pm twice, 61.42 down 9.28 up, 37.8 down 12.6 up. So it varies a bit within a minute. I
