Dog owners, beware: walking your best friends along River Murray levee banks will be a hazardous exercise from next Monday.

Swanport Pest Control will be leaving poisonous bait out for foxes along a 67-kilometre stretch of levees between Mannum and Wellington, on behalf of the Department for Environment and Water (DEW).

The PAPP baits will be buried at 500-metre intervals along the top of the levee banks.

Clear signs will be erected on all gates leading into the area, warning of the dangers and asking owners to muzzle any dogs they must bring inside.

The baiting program, intended to protect native animals and their eggs from being eaten by foxes, will continue until April 15.

DEW's River Murray infrastructure operations manager, Richard Brown, said it was important that everyone knew about it.

"These baits are also lethal to non-target species, including dogs," he said.

"Pet owners are responsible for the safety of their pets and should ensure they are appropriately managed and contained."
