Yet another one to ring today through an 02 number with a delay before the Indian accent kicked in. Claimed to be with a company called Powersavers & that my electricity was going up 30%. They said I was sent a notification then started asking all these questions ending with "is that correct" trying to prompt me into saying yes.
When I started querying their legitimacy she would speak over the top of me. At that point I advised that the scam was busted & the call was being traced.
On the Wednesday, someone rang my wife, and start asking a pile of questions about whether she had been involved in an accident...claimed they were compensation specialists or some such. She was (rightly) suspicious, and started asking a number of peremptory questions. Whoever was on the phone (foreign accent) hung up. They tried the next day also. Trouble is, the wife was driving, and I answered her phone.
I don't suffer fools gladly.
I asked a number of probing questions about how this person knew we'd been in an accident etc. and he then mentioned one of our vehicles...and the penny dropped.
We have a car advertised for sale on Gumtree. These scammers are going through the ads, cold-calling people on the off chance that the owner may have been in some kind of accident, and then selling fraudulent, fee-based services to them.
When I pointed this out to him, he hung up. And hasn't called back since.
I'm sure most on here are older and crustier than I am. That said, there are plenty of unscrupulous people out there trying to take advantage, so be safe out there, and question everything!
