Hi all. We are picking up our brand new caravan in Melbourne soon, will have a permit to tow it home to NSW. We are wondering if we need to take it over a weigh bridge, and where do we go for a blue slip - ie a normal mechanic or an rv place. We are hoping to do this while on the way home so we can have a few days in the new van. Many thanks in advance.
In 2000 (so it is probably a bit out of date), we bought a new caravan in Melbourne. We live in NSW. The dealer offered to register it in NSW or Vic - our choice. At the time, if we registered it in Victoria, we had to pay no stamp duty. In addition, instead of about $450 per year to register it (plus annual roadworthy certificate) the total Vic rego was less than $50. Since we could park it on my sister's 11 acres, and used it mainly as a base to visit my mother, you can guess which option we chose. Anyway, it won't fit into my shed - it is too high (or rather the doorway is too low). I would expect that the caravan dealer could still offer NSW or Vic rego.
We are wondering if we need to take it over a weigh bridge, and where do we go for a blue slip - ie a normal mechanic or an rv place.
For blue slips, go to Safety checks and inspections. Read through that to see the full gen. There are a couple of links to get to the listings of authorised stations. Go through the motions and look for "Unregistered Light Vehicle Inspections" in the accreditation column. Select on or two before you go and ask if they will require a weighbridge certificate or whether they will accept the tare and ATM figure on the compliance plate. Even though they may not need a ticket it will be good to check that the manufacturers tare weight is kosher.
As PeterD said read the RMS web site. But here is a relevant paragraph ;
Vehicles not currently registered in NSW
Vehicles not currently registered in NSW must have an Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Scheme (AUVIS) inspection (previously called a blue slip) before they can be registered. The inspection verifies the safety of an unregistered vehicle, while making sure it meets design and identity standards.
Your vehicle will need an AUVIS inspection if:
The registration expired more than three months ago
You're bringing the vehicle into NSW from another Australian State or Territory, or another country
The vehicle has no number plates
The vehicle is a write-off ------).
As far as the weight goes, in my experience they will always want a weightbridge ticket, BUT only one that is on their approved list. So check that first also or you will have to do it again.

Many thanks everyone, very helpful. Thinking I will try and get it all done at Tumut, can then have a couple of nights in Kosciuszko NP before home to Bega Valley.
