I think you are confused. The D Max can NEVER carry 3.5T.
Do you mean that you want to tow 3.5T? In this case do you want an increase in GCM (Gross Combination Mass?

It already has a 3.5T tow capacity, but you need to ensure you do not exceed the GVM.

As Peter has stated, you have zero chance of carrying 3500kg on a DMax,and with axle ratings of 1350kg front and 1870kg rear you have even less chance of safely towing 3500kg.Like other vehicles in that lightweight group, the ONLY way you can safely tow a 3500kg is if that trailer is a DOG trailer.Seems you are quite confused but if you would like more help please PM me.Cheers.

Didn't mention towing in the question. Maybe his set-up is only on the ute.

Oh Dear...this is looking worse by the minute! If you really have 3500kg on a DMax Spacecab your rear axle will be so overloaded that it will take a lot of work to sort that. With some cars the GVM is well under their axle ratings,so easily upgraded, but your car has a GVM of only 2950kg and axle ratings of 3220kg,both way under your present weight.A few more details on your load may help us give advice.....

I think what travelyounger is saying is his caravan weighs 3.5 tonne on the weighbridge.
If so, he doesn't need a GVM upgrade he needs a bigger tug!

Absolutely correct Montie....there is no way known that you can tow a 3500kg van with a car that has a GCM of only 5850kg....no way.At 10% ball weight that would leave 2700kg GVM,with the van a massive 17%  heavier than the car.Talk about an accident looking for a place to happen. As you say,if she (the profile says F) wants to tow 3500kg,she needs a bigger....much bigger, car.Cheers

Our van is 6.8 m gvm 2.8 Tb weight 280 kg .I could fit another axle but to much expense I already have upgraded suspension but no gvm upgrade I was talking to a mechanic and he said you can do a 400 kg upgrade with pedders cost approx 5500 in WA but maybe not on used cars I was recommended to see ultimate 4wd in perth .this upgrade will only give more payload on the car not over all g I will working in the mildura area until June if anyone knows a good suspension place cheers

Give Lovells in Melbourne a ring they will tell you what's available for the Dmax

I had a Dmax extra Cab with a ARB GVM upgrade before first rego that was a increase of 270KG to 3220GVM , it was the only one available at the time , Lovells hadn't developed theirs at that time .

I think Lovells Dmax upgrade is to 3500kg GVM , like I said ring Lovells then you will know for sure ,

You wont be able to increase GCM it will remain at manufacture spec .

I know you can do a Lovells GVM upgrade on a already registered vehicle , a mate has just done his HiLux .

Lovells probably have a agent in Mildura that could do the job but doing a upgrade on a WA registered vehicle in VIc , dunno about that , probably best to see if Lovells have a agent in WA .

With a 2800kg GVM van and 10% ball weight, your GTM (weight on van wheels) is 2520kg.With a GCM of 5850kg,the MOST your car can weigh is 3330kg including the ball weight, but your 1870kg rear axle is where the problem is going to be.Cheers

Just to chuck a 6mm spanner into the mix. I thought I read somewhere and it might have even been a link on the forum somewhere that the 'powers to be' were going to stop "Upgrades" being done confuse

Could be worth checking up on travelyounger blankstare

Yes mate that's the best , that's the only way you will get accurate information , you can get a GVM upgrade greater than the manufactures axel rating on some vehicles  and I think the Dmax is one of them

from what you have said about the weights above , I think even with a upgrade you will have to look at lightening the load if you want to be legal .

Here ya go , I didn't read the full details but it looks like Lovells can increase the Dmax GVM to 3600kg

 Travelyounger,

Please put some thought into what you are proposing.

You might be advised to spend your money on a more suitable tug.

It was the GCM upgrades that were the issues and were being looked at and I'm not sure how that's going , last time I talked to the local spring joint ( a few months ago )  it was still a grey area .

GVM upgrades are still ok on new and already registered vehicles

Hi I called lovells today 3600 upgrade in most states WA only new vehicles under federal law same with nsw and Victoria. Nsw and Victoria can do vehicles already registered under state laws and only are certified in the state that the car is reg in .the vehicle is legal in all states as it has been certified By there state engineer and if the vehicle is sold out of the state it was certified in will have to be inspected by that states engineer to comply with that states Upgrade specification .THe cost is approx 5000 to 60000 this includes the new suspension labour engineer certificate and New gvm on registration .Some vehicles like 200 cruisers can have there towing up to 4 ton and there overall gvm increased just depends on make and model cheers.

My ranger was done with gvm and gcm upgrade prior to first registration 31/12/18 by lovells. They recommended a transmission cooler fitted as well, $5500 from memory total. Fitted by Allterrian 4x4 in Victoria.

Hi all, some info

The current Federal Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989 and Regulations (Regs) have been reviewed and a new Act - quote:

The Road Vehicle Standards Act 2018 (RVSA) will replace the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989 (MVSA) and deliver an updated and modernised system to regulate the first provision of road vehicles to the Australian market. - unquote.

A quick read indicates that the Act will take effect in parts between Dec18 and Dec19 and transition arrangements will be in place. I would guess that by Dec19 the Regs for the Act will be finalized.

Until then unless stated otherwise IMHO the status quo remains ie the 1989 Act & Regs are in force..

I use to work with the 1989 Act and Regs and whilst standardizing a lot of things there were exemptions for States/territories to maintain some of their own legislation - ie a compromise OR to allow transition period(s) before exchanging things ie rules for Modified Vehicles, 2nd Stage Compliance procedures and plates.

So until some one who has the time to read (takes hours and hours) AND understand it would pay to contact local Motor Vehicle authorities to ensure anything you want can be done at THIS TIME AND REMAIN VALID  plus is it recognized in other states if you move.

Generally speaking vehicles registered in one state/territory can be driven Australia wide.

Just my opinion as I haven't got the time to follow through.

https://www.legislation.gov.au/Details/C2016C00857   Old Act 1989

https://www.legislation.gov.au/Details/C2016C00857   1989 Regulations

NOTE; THE FED GOVT WEBSITE SAYS ALL ARE CURRENT AS AT TODAY

Happy reading folks.
