RE: Jeep Grand Cherokee for towing

Dicko I had the Safety Dave wiring on the Jeep done by an auto electrician after we bought it. I got them to fit  Waza cable connections,  they ran the cabling from the socket mounted near the 12 pin plug through the door sills etc. and brought it out of the drivers side door pillar so it protrudes about 150mm onto the dash. When towing I connect the monitor to the cable by lining up the arrows and then just attach it to the the windscreen next to the instrument panel using the adjustable bracket with the suction cap. You can opt for a screen that fits on your rear view mirror but I prefer where it is because its easy to see without taking your eyes off the road.. If you go for the Safety Dave I recommend that you spend the extra $ and get a Waza cable kit (the flexible cord with fittings for both the car and the van).

 Thanks for your reply Dave.

I have the same vehicle as yours. It appears you have a separate rear view monitor fitted for the caravan.

I believe an additional rear view camera can be integrated into the dash display.

Youtube videos show how to touch screen switch between cameras but does not show how to wire in.

I have the Safety Dave camera on the van too, but actually prefer to have a separate screen for it.

It is on constantly monitoring the traffic behind, if it was integrated, you would have to switch over frequently Dicko. And when reversing, would not the car camera take over?

Dicko matter of personal preferrence but I agree with Bob I use the info screen for all sorts of things when travelling like navigation, music etc. I like having a separate monitor.

Here is a word of advice check your screen for any signs of it delaminating (usually starts at the top) - it is a known problem with some 2018 WKs as apparently there was a batch of faulty screens. Mine started doing weird things about a month ago like selecting different functions without me touching the screen. The top protective layer delaminates and interferes with the touch screen underneath it - its pretty obvious once it starts. The 2018s 5yr warranty will run out next year so keep your an eye on it.. I took mine into the Jeep dealership last week expecting to get the run around but they were really good they took a photo of the screen checked my service log and ordered a new unit under a warranty claim. They said it would probably take a couple weeks for them to get one and a couple of hours for them to fit it. I asked the service guys if they had seen many like mine and they said they had replaced a couple with the same problem. When it first started happening we were on the road in outback Qld and it was hot, I thought maybe I had left it parked in the direct sun without a shade over the windscreen and the heat had caused the delamination. I was actually relieved to find out I hadn't done anythinng to cause it because I was expecting an argument about whether it would be covered under the warranty..

Thanks Nev, Bob and Dave for your responses.

I have more clarity about the wiring now and it appears Safety Dave is one way to go.

Found a link now, however, to what I was actually looking for, in Sweden.

It's called RAX JAILBREAKER and sold by CustomTroniX in Nacka, Sweden.

Not cheap but is integrated to the head unit.
