Tax on the average Aussie

Can someone confirm these figures

You earn $100 ..income tax takes $33 leaving you $67

You buy $67 of fuel and the excise duty on that is 48% aprox $34

So you have earned $100 and been taxed $67.

No, you have bought fuel and paid excise on it.    Nothing to do with your income and what you earned so that isn't relevant.   You can complain about the amount of fuel excise, but comparing it to income tax doesn't make much sense.

No. Not that simple. You only pay tax above $18,200 and if you are a senior, tax comes in at nearly $33,000 p.a.

If you only earn a $100, no tax is payable.

please explain

You do not pay $33 on every $100 earned because of our sliding scale of tax. If you earn between $37,000 & $90,000 you pay $32.50 per $100 and from $90,000 to $180,000 you pay $37.00 for every $100. You do however pay excise on alcohol, tobacco & petrol and GST.

As senior self-funded retirees (SAPTO), my wife and I have to earn nearly $66,000 before we pay any tax. Long way shy of that. We still have our full $100 before we get caught with excise and GST.

Try calculating tax at https://www.taxcalc.com.au/1819.html Financial Advisors are reluctant (or ignorant) to tell you about SAPTO.

Google / Wikipedia will give a good definition of excise duties. One can avoid excise by not drinking, not smoking and walking or riding a pushbike.

However personally I much rather a drink or three and a ride in a petrol powered vehicle and cough up the excise.

There is nothing more certain than death and taxes (someone famous said that).

Average wage is about $90,000. Tax on that including 2% Medicare is $24.50 per $100 ($22.50 without medicare). Not $33 per $100. It can be complicated.

There was talk today of getting rid of import tariff (5%) as we no longer have any industries that need to be protected (eg. motor industry).

Yep, I too worked bloody hard long hours paying taxes as I went through that previous life. I now enjoy this great land without complaint, that my taxes helped build.

All those paying taxes now will also get the chance to enjoy life when they finish work.

Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

Gday...

Ditto Blaze, ditto.

I worked for an old bloke once (I woz a youngun) and he said that "Ya shouldn't worry about paying tax, it means ya must be earning money"

He also used to say that it wasn't ME paying the tax, HE (as my employer) paid the tax for me ... he maintained I never paid a cent tax coz the employer pays it - eg ya earn $500, he would pay me $405 and then he would pay the government the $95 tax. I never saw, nor paid, that $95 - AND if I played my cards right I also got a small refund at year's end from the $95 he paid on my behalf.

His way of figuring it.

Cheers - John

I think fuel exise is way too high. Businesses like couriers, take a pay cut evrry time fuel prices rise. Lot of people doing it tough out there. Just have to see bankruptcy numbers.

I suspect that the Bankruptcy numbers will get worse, before they get better...

Gday...

Speaking fairly generally, it is not the fuel excise, or taxes generally, that contributes to bankruptcy applications.

It is the inability of the enterprise to support and service their debt levels.

Now, how they got that debt level is obviously up for debate, but taxes don't put a business into bankruptcy ... except where those taxes have become a tax debt.

Cheers - John

 Good point John

And without debating that issue the merry go round for a business to updaye a car for example to allieviate an approaching tax burden (GST, depreciation benefits etc) often is a quick fix with long term consequences.

But fuel is still too expensive

Can someone explain ...
" if you are a senior, tax comes in at nearly $33,000 p.a. "

Where does the 33K PA come from?

getting back to what I thought the op was trying to point out is that not only do we pay income tax (at what ever rate is appropriate)we also pay various other taxes/levies (including fuel)ect with our money that we have already payed tax on. in the example used the other $33 would probably attract another minimum 10% gst making it over $70 per $100 if you drink or smoke could be more

It called SAPTO. Seniors and Pensioners Tax Offset. See https://www.superguide.com.au/smsfs/no-tax-retirement-sapto and https://www.taxcalc.com.au/1819.html

Not sure what the real SAPTO figure but it's > $32,900. It is automatically applied if you do your tax via eTax. Financial Planners and Advisors are pretty quiet about the SAPTO (used be called SATO).

The points made are very, very valid. We get taxed on our income, then business get taxed on such things as import duties, company tax, payroll tax (which are passed onto us - the consumer) the we get hit with GST and excise. I thought GST was sold to us with the idea of removing all the other state & federal taxes. We probably wouldn't be enjoying our good standard of living without taxes.

In an item I read earlier this week there is a push to remove the 5% import tax as it costs more to collect and administer the tax than is actually collected. However as some little Bureaucrat will probably lose his/her power plus staff, it probably not going to end up happening. The tax was very, very high when we were protecting the likes of our motor industry

Well if you Rob a bank or get your money on the black market or a pension and pay zero tax when you receive it , When you spend it you pay tax if you don't want to pay fuel tax just don't buy fuel .

We arent talking free rides at all. We are talking taxes on top of taxes...what taxes we should not be paying or less tax read...fair tax.

Where does the OP say he wants a "free ride".?
