Stone guards or similar for off-road caravan

I've previously had a camper trailer and have just bought my first caravan-an offroad one-and will be travelling through the outback regularly.  Can anyone help as to what is the best way to stop stones hitting the van and/or my 4WD.  Thanks

We use Corflute panels (cut out of election posters or beer posters) stuck to outside of rear windows of Patrol (Velcro tape) to protect from rock strikes bouncing back from Mesh guard mounted on A Frame. easily removed when we are bobtail.

If you are getting serious as regards van protection there is only one way to go, Stone Stomper.

Works best when politician's face is facing the stones!

Hi MJB

This has been discussed on just about every 4x4 and RV forum over the last couple of years.

The result overall by a long shot is the "Stone Stomper", made in Adelaide by Christian.

Not only is his product exceptional but he also provides fantastic service and back up.

We have had 2 during the last 10yrs or so, only changed(new van) because each vans A frame size varies.

They are about $600 but far better than the Rock Tamer type flaps in my opinion(and many many others)

cheers
Ian
No and not related to Mr StoneStomper, just a very very happy customer, twice.

Hi mjb,
Have a look on page 3 of the General Forum - 3rd to bottom discussion.

If you're handy with steel, a welder, & some mudflaps you could make one.

I see you're a new member - welcome! Have a look at all of the sections of the forum & the "Search" button - there are lots of goodies in here.

I don't suppose you used to work out of Proserpine (Qld)? Could there be two mjbs?

Thanks Ian.  I've had a couple of emails with Christian and his response is good.  A potential concern I have is: I presume the stone stomper push stones under the van potentially causing problems to exposed pipes, etc. Should these be covered or extra mud guards at the front of the van.  Mick

G'day Warren - thanks for your response.  Unfortunately, I'm no good at DIY.  There must be another mjb as I'm from victoria.  Regards,  Mick
