In SA last year, the 10 cents works reasonably well, but it's been 10 cents since inception, could be a bit more now.
The other issue in SA is if it is not refundable, ie plastic wrappers, it is chucked, so the refund only works on a very narrow portion of products.
The system works VERY well, and the deposit is still 10c. It was 5c when first introduced.
As for the rest of the rubbish I disagree with you. No proof, but in my travels around SA and interstate, it looks to me as though SA has less of all types of rubbish on the roadside.
Have to agree with you Hewy, i think in my travels last year, Vic, NSW, Qld and the NT and SA, without a doubt SA had less rubbish on the sides of the road and NO cans/bottles that I noticed, BUT I am SA myself so maybe a bit one eyed.
Taking individual cans, as in NSW, to a machine is a toatal waste of time, people will just not bother. Maybe good for certain "events" with large crowds but other than that useless. Most people here store their cans/bottles and then take them in bulk to recycle, in and out in minutes. AND it actually creates employment.
safe travels

Since the 10c deposit was introduced in NSW most people I know keep their cartons and refill them with the empty containers. At some point they take them back to a recycling machine and cash them in. Within 5km of us I know of at least 6 recycling centres - I have found that the ones that are located in the carparks of clubs are usually quiet with no one there, the ones located in shopping centre carparks are usually crowded. We give our cartons of empties to our grandkids, their parents make them save half the money and let spend the other half - works for us.
How bad it is, depends on how long that rubbish took to accumulate, some of it could be several years old.
Also depends on number of people using the area , could be hundreds or thousands.
And the people complaining have a business incentive for no campers to the area.
I'm not saying that the rubbish is acceptable, just saying it "may" not be as bad as it 1st appears.
