Digital TV Interference (22")

Hi,

We are having trouble with interference in the form of pixelization and sound breakup. I happens when I run the 12 V exhaust fans in the toilet or shower. I could put up with that but I have just recently bought a re-chargeable 8" fan and this also causes the problem whether its running of any power source (240V / 12V) including when running off the internal battery.

Only the fans cause this, air con and other appliances seem to have no detrimental effect.

Any ideas how to fix this problem?

It seems the (cheap) 12V motors in bathroom exhaust fans create interference with most TV's using the same 12V system - If you can run the TV on 240V if in caravan park that may relieve the interference.

Mmmm, I don't recall if running the TV on 240v fixes the problem. However I would still like it to work OK on 12v anyway.

Neil,
A cheap way could be the addition of a 1microfarad capacitor added to across the 12v feed to the fans (take care of the polarity if it is an electrolytic & the voltage rating is 20v) - just like we had to fit on the ignition system on cars years ago.
I'd guess the cause of the interference is sparking from the brushes & commutator.
The other option is shorter wash/toilet usages!

Thanks Warren,

Van is in storage so will look at the option of fitting a capacitor in a few weeks. See what's involved.

Is this a common issue?

So putting a filter on the TV arial won't work?

Thanks Warren, yep, I guessed it was the brushes.

Neil,
A filter on the TV aerial? It might but I'm not certain what is available or at what cost. You'd need a High Pass Filter with the lowest frequency equal to the minimum TV channel.

PeterD might know if you can "wake him up" - he could be on holidays as I haven't seen any posts from him recently.

Any other options?
Would it be possible to shield the motor?

Sounds like a lot of mucking around for not very much of a benefit - unless you're looking for a job & want to do some experimenting.

I'd try the capacitor first.

You could always replace the offending fan/motor with a better one. I am a screen addict but I wouldn't bother for a couple of minutes a day.

Ive heard a ferrite sleeve could fix the problem.

Yeh.  The 2 exhaust fans normally only run for 10 minutes a day. Not a big deal.   But the portable battery operated fan for hot weather is the real issue.. Run it for several hours at a time.

By "Battery operated fan" Do you mean running on van's 12v system? If so the fan motor may need rewinding.

The fan has its own batteries that can be charged from 240v or 12v. Even when operating from the internal batteries it causes the pixilizing.

It must be a brush type DC motor to give you interference.Does repositioning it well away from the tv reduce the problem?

If It does  , can you access the actual motor? Is it metal or plastic encased?

Does the problem only show up in weak signal areas or all the time ,no matter where located & what way the antenna is pointing.

Have you tried changing the direction of the Antenna so it points towards the nearest tv station. Another option could be a signal booster in the antenna feed line. Another cause could be a faulty coupling lead from arial outlet to TV.
