Solos? What Solos?

Where are all the Solos hiding?  confuse That's a question I was asking myself the whole time I was away.

Just got back from 2mths travelling through Vic & southern NSW, over 4,000kms, a mixture of free camping & C/Pks & sad to say I never met one other solo traveller.  I did meet a couple of single ladies, obviously friends,  who were travelling together in separate campervans and a bloke in a van who was travelling with another couple in a van but  I don't really class them as Solos as they were travelling with friends.

Everywhere I went I seemed to be the only solo person wandering around on my own & although I love travelling & driving I feel a bit out of place when I'm on my own amongst a large group of pairs & couples etc.  Everywhere I camped I was the only solo & people seemed really surprised to see a lady travelling around on her own.

Perhaps it was a case of just being in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Had a great time anyway and am looking forward to my next trip or if I can clear my house out and rent it, full time on the road.smile

Might look into joining a solos group.

Hi Dianne, I am a Solo and have been for 7 years now. Like you I use free camps and caravan parks along with donation camps and showgrounds.

I have come across many 'solo' travellers, on their own. As we speak I am in a very small CVP and there are two solos plus me makes three.

I will speak to anyone. Some I say hi to first and some say hi to me first. Most times a good chat follows, including with couples, in fact mostly couples.

I have made many friends and met many members from this Forum over the years. Both solo's and couple's. Sometimes I go out of my way to meet them and them me, I really appreciate that. It's worth it as mostly nice people.

I hope you get to meet many solos out here in the playground but don't forget the couple's.

Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

Hi Dianne,

Im surprised you didnt see any other Solos, as I see them everywhere I go.  Theres literally thousands of them.  Im solo, but travel with a friend in convoy, each in our own Motorhomes and weve met quite a few.

There are womens solo Groups on Facebook who are always organising get togethers all over the country, perhaps joining one of these would open up more social avenues for you as theyre certainly there.

Hi Doug

I too will chat to anyone & although I didn't come across any solos, I met some lovely couples along the way.  Even spent a few days with one couple and a single bloke travelling with them. They very kindly took me out to Tilba in their 4wd to save me driving my big motorhome in there which would've been very problematic given it was such a tiny place with very limited parking especially for vans & large motorhomes.

Maybe I'll meet some solos on my next trip. My daughter is getting married in Townsville next Aug so I'm planning a big trip around Qld before and after that.

Might see you on the road sometime.

Safe Travels

Di

Hi Conquester

Ideally I'd love to find someone with their own rig to travel in tandem with also as I'd like to go across the Nullabor & up & around to Darwin at some point but would be a bit dubious to try it on my own.

I did look on Facebook a while ago and found a couple of groups but they were American so might give that another go & make sure I put Australia in the search.

The biggest one appears to be Women Caravanning, Camping and Travelling Solo Around Australia.  This has nearly 5,000 members and is very active.

Hello dundreamin,
I don't know about a "Solo" but we met a relative of Ned Kelly out at The Painted Desert a couple of years ago. She camped in National & Conservation Parks generally not far from others & was going from the PD to the River Murray where she was going to canoe a far proportion of its length!

She was in a well equipped BT50 & had her canoe on top. Said she had no worries but didn't take risks.

If you need some extra advice about North Qld, don't be afraid to drop a PM - you'll be starting to pick up a bit of the warmer (high 20s) weather in August.

There are a few solo facebook groups, solos cruisin oz is one group. we had a half dozen members come stay at our park for a get together, had a trivia night and a music night, some of them had never physically met each other before, so I think they enjoyed putting faces to names, they were a really nice group. When i travelled solo I think i met more solos in tassie for some reason than anywhere else.
The only time I ever felt alone was when I went to a big cmca rally, just wasn't my scene, too many clicky couples .

HI dundreamin: I've joined the CMCA solo group on fb. You need to pay for the membership but they have a wide range of chapters with meetings in various parts of the country. Seems to be a very welcoming place. Might be worth a try.

Hi Lily

I am a member of the CMCA but dropped out of the Solos section when I wasn't travelling for awhile but am thinking about re-joining at some point.

Unfortunately the CMCA solo chapter in SA is no longer running but might head to the CMCA  rally in Elmore later in the year on my way back from Qld.

Thanks
