was a nasty accident, but the 4wd was NOT towing a van. THere was a third vehicle that was towing a camper trailer (camper was upside down) but police are not sure of its involvement as yet. could have been trying to avoid the collision
Thanks Peter, have corrected the heading in my original post, the first report I read stated 4WD towing van, looking at the mess I can understand the confusion.
Peter there is nothing wrong with the road that section is only a few years old the problem is the idiots using the road there have been a few accidents where over seas people forget what side of the road to drive on and even in this case one of the vehicles have crossed over double white lines to get on the wrong side of the road I have used it a couple of times but now i use the inland road i feel safer traveling the same road as the trucks use
Boab 100% right used it last Monday the Lancelin to Leeman is the new section and a good wide road .Wanneroo to Lancelin is windy narrow BUT they are doing heaps of widening and putting in overtaking lanes .The Leeman to Brand H.way is also very old, windy and narrow with only about 3 overtaking opputinities in the 45 odd ks but doesn,t have the same accidents .I agree with the tourist comment they are a horror to come upon most going to the Pinnacles near Cervantes they tailgate for 10/20 ks then scream past and then vary speed from 80 to 110 and drift all over the road.
I think this accident has done it for me Brand Highway from now on.
I saw this on ABC. I was on that road in July & thought is was pretty good.
The Hilux hit the back of the campervan being towed by a LandCruiser. Then the Hilux went to the other side of the road into the van! The initial cause of the accident is not clear.

Nothing wrong with the road to be honest. Have travelled on it a good number of times. It's the numnuts using it. Pass on blind bends/crests, cross double white lines and exceed the speed limits by considerable amounts. And that's the locals not the overseas tourists who are often worse.
They could do to put in a good few more overtaking lanes as you do get a lot of vans travelling that road and many of them doing 80kph or so. There is little opportunity for anyone with a van to pull over and let people through either as the road does not have good shoulders for doing that in many places.

Sounds a lot like the more northern sections of the Bruce Highway.
I wonder why our fuel taxes arent spent on our roads.
It is sad for all concerned in this crash.

Looks like the hilux driver either had a heart attack that caused the crash or had one as a consequence of the crash

We don't even know the full circumstances of this tragic accident yet, but once again members of this forum take the opportunity of a horrific road accident to lay into tourists.
In this case it seems likely the only tourists involved were passengers in the minibus being driven by an Australian driver. Two of them died and another four are in hospital with serious injuries.
Please, let's not rush to demonise tourists whenever there's a bad accident. I've yet to see any statistics that tourists cause more accidents than locals, all I've heard is opinions. My opinion, and I stress it is only that, but based on having driven that stretch of road many times towing my caravan, is it's local Perthites trying to get to Kalbarri and points north within one day's driving from home who do the most dangerous overtaking manoeuvres.
This particular accident it appears as though the driver in the silver 4wd ute has had a medical incident as yet undetermined and crossed to the wrong side of the road clipping a camper trailer which overturned and then colliding head on with the minibus.
Although this looks on the surface to be a tragic accident, we seem to have too many idiots on our country roads who take both their own life and every other road user's life with a grain of salt.
Instead of sitting behind speed cameras they need to have more patrols on the roads and start teaching people to drive properly. That includes not letting mum and dad teach the kids.

I failed my first driving test due to parents. Then got driving lessons & the first thing the instructor said is 'I am not going to teach you how to drive!' He said that I am going to teach you how to pass a test. Passed the test perfectly.

News last night said the driver of the ute was suffering a cardiac event and suggested this caused the accident. Although that may be the case the case here, there is a lot of traffic on this road and I travel up to Wedge and beyond to fish very often and noticed a big increase in the volume of caravans, motorhomes etc using this road. I think all the traffic that previously used the dreaded Brand Hwy have migrated to the IOD.

And what if the old man/woman just happens to be a qualified Driving Instructor...?

News last night said the driver of the ute was suffering a cardiac event and suggested this caused the accident.
When I was a kid we were returning to our car parked in the main street & a car smashed into 3 parked car taking out the side of each. Our car was the last to be hit with some damage.
Later we found out the driver had a heart attack. The passenger grabbed & pulled the steering wheel to the left to stop the car running into oncoming traffic.
Luckily other than a pile of repairs no one else was injured.
