Storm Warning for those on the Nullarbor....

WEATHER DETAILS:

At 04/12/2018 15:30:00 the Bureau of Meteorology advised satellite imagery showed a line of thunderstorms between Carnegie and Balladonia. Showers and thunderstorms have developed in the warning area and it is possible some of these may be severe. Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds, heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding and large hailstones in the warning area this afternoon. Storms could cause damage to homes and property.

ROAD CLOSURES AND CONDITIONS:

Some roads may be closed

Take extra care on the roads and do not drive into water of unknown depth and current.

K.J.

There is a new forum for such warnings:

I would not want to be there along the coast with a serious storm. The sand on top of North Head Sydney has been deposited there by storms.

I've found the biggest potential problem with a wet Nullabor is the soft/slippery/dangerous muddy edges.....stay on the road at all times...seen several vehicles towing vans come to grief when their left side wheels hit the red slippery mud...deadly to be unlucky enough to get a flat tyre during/after rains.....established road side stops only when its wet....Hoo Roo

Just a couple of comments here -

1. Whenarewethere - a great picture & it brings back many memories BUT no-one should take risks where to get the perfect picture by going too close to the edge. The edges are risky - best to stay well back. There is just over 100m of cliff to the water & an equal amount under the water!
From recollection, there is only one spot where access to the sea is possible in the cliff section from Head of Bight to the sands near Eucla, but I'm not going o divulge that for safety reasons. And if the wind is blowing from the north, not only is it uncomfortable (hot at this time of the year), but it doubles the danger of walking too close to the edge.

2. Goldfinger - the red soil doesn't start (in the SA section) of the Eyre Highway until much further north - into the Nullarbor Plain proper. The edges of the SA section of the highway are a lot better than other highways in Australia. Both Crawfords & McMahon Constructions did a wonderful job of building that road.

Thank you for your concern. I was careful, the photo was carefully cropped to look like one leg is using a sky hook! One also needs to be careful of holes in the ground out there & be in the car with lightning. Pretty scary place, but well worth the drive, we took our time & walked up some of the escapements, the trees up there looked like they belong in the snowy mountains (photo a little west of Eucla)! Golf course & old jetty near Eucla.
