Diesel for fuel economy, pulling power . Late model Utes are high stressed though . Not much in reserve if things go wrong or neglected!

17700 km around west half of Australia. 10.48 L/100, 1/3 95, 2/3 98 & a bit of 91 because I couldn't get 95 or 98 everywhere & a handful of places didn't have any petrol at all.

I made sure I had spare 98 so I could thin out with 91 as I need 95. Sometimes I didn't buy 98 as it was too expensive.

If you are a senior don't forget to ask for the 3 cents per litre discount in NT most places give the discount!

I did have a roof platform, still got it, but swapping it for a second set of cross bars I gained 16 kg, so can carry more fuel. On rough roads I put the solar panels in the car which gets 15 kg off the roof. 4 x 10 litres & 2 x 5 litres in the wheel. 10 litres is as much as I want to lift up & down from the roof.

The sixth tyre is all I could get in Hall Creek.

P.S. I personally find text a bit challenging to read with regular full stops.

With 300l tank I dont need to carry extra fuel . I did when up north WA just for safety . A 20 litre container. Diesel is much easier, safer to store .

Back in the 1980s they came up with the idea of filling the fuel container with expanded metal mesh. It reduced the volume of the tank by only 1% but it stopped the tank from exploding.

Probably a good thing for jerrycans.

Wish I could increase my car's fuel tank capacity but unfortunately I am stuck with external containers. I have tried to make my setup as safe as I can. Unlike the following situation!

I may be wrong, but you don't appear to be "towing" anything. Suspect your fuel economy would change - and markedly - for the worse if you were.

We'd probably achieve similar economy in our Grand Vitara on the open road (full-time 4WD/3.2 V6). On the other hand, we recently towed a 4.8M runabout a fair distance (~1T in all-up weight). Fuel economy? *poor*
