Have delayed buying ramps for our Tandem van for years as we mostly camp in the bush and if necessary dig small holes for the wheels to level out the van ( and refill the holes when I moved off) anyway recently had a few instances where ramps would be handy so purchased 2 yellow 5000Kg ramps at a good price. $39.20 from the firm below
Further to the purchase of the Ramps above( $49 less 20%). They come with what appears to be a well made carry bag, however I intend to mount these ramps on the A frame between the gas bottles and the van.
Will have a rectangular metal tube welded to 2 U bolts, bolted to the A frame and the Ramps will be mounted on their sides with 25cm bolts ( approx.) one for each ramp going thru them and the bolts welded to the tube.
Holes in the appropriate place eg half way along the ramp. The ramps held onto the bolt /tube using a wing nuts. The highest part of the ramps will be on the outside of the A frame the thinnest in the middle. The thinnest parts will over lap and to prevent sideways movement I will weld a U shaped piece of metal to the tube and the thinnest part of the ramps will fit inside. Alternatively 2 bolts for each ramp could be used to prevent sideways movement.
I intend to look at a using a piece of hardwood to support the end of the ramp that I have cut off and slope the wood down to fit close to the tyre. Loose fitment of the wood to the ramp or screwed yet to be determined.
I looked at using ramps that easily fit between the Tandem tyres, as a friend uses, but to me the ones I have seen do not have the height.
I also considered the ramps with the extension bit, for the ramp between the tandem wheels ie. you drive up the ramp, partner says stop and adds the extra piece, I did not go ahead with this idea because of the extra bits/storage/hassle involved.
Bush camping we get some very un even ground, and we have the Standard Tandem Rocker suspension on our Traveller 21'6" van, so with 2 largest ramps under 1 side, that will give us max lift height eg 4 inches? I think using only 1 ramp, the rocker suspension will even out and only raise our van 2".
