Hi all, the newie is still drinking from this fonuntain of knowledge. I have just had a quote to wire my car up for the van the controllers I have used before have had 2 adjustments one for how mush brake came on and the other for how soon it came on (and an override slider)

I have been quoted a RED ARC TOW PRO ELITE BRAKE CONTROLLER they just have one nob does anyone know anything about this type of controller

Probably the best seller, have one in ours NSGN, haven't used, seen or heard of anything better.

Very good controller - it indicates by Green thru to Red how well the brakes are working or not.

Thanks Travelling Dillberries (great name) the guy in the store didn't know a lot about them. He didn't know if you could adjust break byas or if it had an override but I saw a great video on line which explained everything. But it is still great to here from someone who has used one.

Yep, fitted one to my car and works a treat. Tried to convince the brother to get one but he decided on $80 box with slider. With the redarc the main "brain" can be hidden away under the dash or behind kick panel. it is the size of a 25 cigarette packet so it is easily tucked out of sight.

Yes I use the Redarc Job. Much better than the one it replaced.

 I had it wired in by an Auto Electrician, and it never worked to my satisfaction. 

I was in ARB in Welshpool and mentioned it to them,  their Auto Elec had a look at the wiring.  It was wired incorrectly.

The previous guy had just used the wiring for my old Tekonsha controller.   The Redarc one needs to be done correctly with properly sized wiring, direct to the Battery.

They sorted it out for me and it has not missed a beat since.

On our Ford Ranger we had a Teckoncha which was OK but hung under the dash near my right knee.

When we bought our current car we had an in dash Redarc fitted which is in my opinion is slightly better & simple to work.

Glows green when connected & red when brakes are applied.

Just a simple dial with numbered setting.

When in auto mode it's recommended to leave it on 5 setting but we have ours on 4 as it felt like the caravan was pulling the car up on 5.

We've had a number of emergency braking episodes & it works great. Very happy.

Push the knob in for over-ride.

 Sounds like the controllers you have used in the past are the old synchroniser style. They only provide a fixed amount of braking each time you press the brake pedal. The newer controllers have decelerometers in them to check how heavily you are braking. The controllers then apply the power to the van brakes in sympathy with what you are doing. - Brake Controllers - The first two in the top LH are definitely proportional controllers. I am not sure about the CompactIQ. The other two are definitely timer style controllers.

My compact iq controler is a proportional type .
Works well but I need to recalibrate each trip as per their instructions.
If I dont re calibrate I get a hot right side drum.

I have a Red-Arc Tow pro, had two Tekonsha's previous. I have no complaints about the Tow pro. Much better installation on the dash. It would be my recommendation.

 You might call it white noise but the people comenting here have like myself have had both types ,and updated to red arc,the other makes of brake controllers work well theres nothing wrong with them,the red arc takes up no room its just a neat little nob with a tiny dial to adjust braking force,The only reason I fitted one was because I bought a new car and beyond a shadow of a doubt there a lot neater than the old things.....
