Modern parenting... or the lack of it....

Call me old fashioned if you will but I always though it was the parents job to raise, care for and educate their three year old children.

Bit difficult when both parents must work Mike - it's pretty unusual to find a single income family with young kids nowdays unless one of the parents is in the upper 5% and then they will probably have a young babysitter on a visa.
People really don't think anything of both parents having to work as its the norm and any government assistance to earn money to pay taxes is always welcome. I'm pleased we still live in a community and not an economy.

Regards

Old fashioned people put their spending on hold whilst the kids were raised. Both parents seem to work these days to fund their lifestyle. It's all about needs and wants. Do you know of any modern parents who actually stays home for their holidays?

Some couples love to work. Our daughter lectures/teaches medicine at a university & her husband is a chief corporate accountant with a power company.

Our daughter would be bored to snorts as a stay at home mother, she has too many brains & loves to use them.

Fits the description on my son & his wife (IT professional and Lawyer). They are used to the DINK lifestyle and not stay at home people.  (DINK - Double Income No Kids).

Still I suppose it's the taxes and their good income that funds childcare. It it wasn't for people breeding, then neither would have a job.

Or perhaps we (the West) as a culture have totally lost the plot and nowadays think the object of life is to amass wealth above all else?

I don't think anyone ever lay on their deathbed and uttered; "I wish I'd owed a new BMW" but, I'd wager, a lot have regretted they didn't have a better relationship with their children.

If you don't wish to spend time with and nurture your children then don't have any.

Let kids be kids. They have enough learning years ahead of them without starting at age 3

I agree Mike, the way we value wealth and material things over family in Western society is deplorable, no wonder the social fabric of Australian society is falling apart.

I find this statement highly offensive as well as belittling to women who do choose to stay at home and look after their children   "Our daughter would be bored to snorts as a stay at home mother, she has too many brains & loves to use them" it suggests women who choose to do the right thing and nurture their offspring are lesser beings than the materialistic, shallow, conniving, grasping, wealth accumulators who are a blight on western civilisation.

Perhaps women who "would be bored to snorts" by raising kids should forget about having children and leave the job to those better suited to the task.

Good parenting is a skill that is rapidly disappearing.

Everyone is good at something. Me, mine was mothering. Others whatever. we all have different values. What means a lot to me might  be worthless to others And vise versa.

Why do we, as humans give our young to someone else to raise. I do not know of any other animal that does that. i stayed home and raised my 4 children And i am mainly responsible, oh and strop to, for how they turned out No one else To blame. Lucky they turned out ok. I was the disciplinarian. Now when they are disciplining their kids i hear them saying things i said to them. I just turn away and have a smirk.

Santa, yes, good parenting certanly is a skill And one that is under valued in our society. Yes, some children are better off bein raised by someone other than their parents but mostly not. Its called day care centres and nannies. I look at those places and think of them as holding pens

all i can say is i am glad i raised my children when i did and not today. I do not envy any parent struggling and at mental breaking point because they just want to be at home to nurture their child But have no choice. And also the big worry of to vaccinate or not to vaccinate. Parents today must be stressed out of their brains. I am sure most families would prefer mum to be at home.

i am sincerely sorry if i have offened anyone with my thoughts but there you have it, warts n all.

the powers that be certainly have a lot to answer for.

the rocket and Santa. Wholehartedly agree with what both you say.

This made me think about school trips. I never went on any trips until secondary school. In 6 years I went on two day trips. One on a tour of all the monuments around Ballarat and one to the open air theatre at the Arts Centre in Melbourne). The schools I went to were very aware of the working class families and what people could afford. My parents were never asked for money for extra curricular activities. Kids in my neighbourhood went to stay with relatives for holidays and none of us ever felt we were missing out. I always preferred to stay at home for holidays and play with all the kids in the neighbourhood. It was also considered the duty of parents to take their kids to museums, a trip around the Great Ocean Road, exploring around Hall's Gap.

Mike , Santa, Rocket and LLD - agree with your sentiments.  These days it seems everything must be had now. Go into debt, two incomes etc just to have it all.  And then some bleat about the lack of government support, child care too expensive, can't make ends meet  etc. Get real people.

My wife stopped working and stayed home to raise our 2. One income, not highly paid at that, and we survived OK.  Still went on annual holidays with the kids - touring around this great country.  What a great education and grounding that gave them.  My son even corrected his primary school teacher once on the location of one of the deserts.  biggrin
