I'm planning on going full GN in a motorhome was was wondering if there is an etiquette regarding "keeping your parking space" if you need to use the motorhome for some reason after setting up in your spot? I plan to use a folding electric bike for short range trips into town etc but if I wanted to head further afield for several hours (say) and return to "my" space. Cones & tape????
Sorry Phil, but If you move the motorhome/caravan it would be un-mannerly to try and reserve a space, to attempt to do so may end up in a nasty argument.
If there are other campers nearby you may ask them to advise any newcomers that you intend on returning, but unless you have paid for any particular campsite you cannot reserve it.
There have been times we have returned to a previous spot a couple of days later and our previous space was still unoccupied, but that's just plain lucky.

Yep I have chained tables, chairs. Usually talk to guys beside . But I most cases there is more than enough room plus we dont generally park that close . Funny in Afternoon there is heaps of room . By morning there could be 20 extra vans near you . The Nullarbor was like that ? Secuity I guess in numbers .
As I do not have a car, to go sightseeing, I have to use my motorhome
If I have to leave camp for many hours, then it is a case of finding another spot, when I return
I assume that etiquette, for a camping spot, is that when you leave, it becomes empty, and first in is best dressed
But
If I am only going away, to do a bit of shopping, I shall leave my table/chairs etc, and ask other campers to keep an eye open for me
If I am stopping at a camp for more than a day, I try to ensure that I have enough supplies to last
I have yet to see, a camp site, marked off with cones or tape
Ahh I've got a freestanding driveaway annexe that I use with my campervan also leave a table and chairs set up outside of it. However, I've not tried this on any free sites yet, only on grassed unpowered unmarked sites in caravan parks. Get one of those pop-up Gazebos, tie it down, and leave it with some chairs underneath. Chained to something if possible.
Not sure whether this is proper etiquette either. Love to get some feedback, but it's what I've been doing and actually am refining for my next trip.... One for the side and a blow up one for the rear.... I wouldn't be gone for more than a few hours though either.

I was assuming the question was relating to caravan parks.
I don't really see the difference in parking a caravan in a free camp then going sightseeing to leaving some equipment on the site to reserve it if you have a motorhome especially if there is someone nearby to keep an eye on it.

When we were camped in the overflow campsite at the Yulara Caravan Park, there was just that - a motorhome when our for the day and left his/her outdoor table & chairs. Later that day, a caravan pulled in, parked right beside the table and chairs and put there annex up. They were sitting there at happy hour when the owners returned.
A few choice words were exchanged, the table retrieved, the motorhome set up in another spot in the camp grounds.
Just passing on what we saw, not making comment.

Reminds me of a story I read recently about a woman standing in a car parking spot at the shopping center to reserve a spot for when her husband gets there. seems to me leaving a table and chairs there is the same sort of thing. Landy

That works in caravan parks. Does it work in the bush? If I saw things left behind at bush camping I would see it as abandoned equipment.
I can't believe anyone would leave anything in a bush camping spot, do people actually do that? Only way possible IMO would be if you went as a group and others stayed around to keep an eye on your property. They would need to be vigilant though. Can't imagine a solo traveller new to a spot doing this? There's also another scenario that I'm considering, that is maybe getting a couple of electric bikes or even those fold up Electric scooters and leaving the Hiace poptop and annex locked up there. Is that a goer or not I wonder?

I don't know if it is an urban myth or not but; I heard of a couple that unhitched their new caravan to go to town and they asked the people camped in a van next to them to watch it and they would be back in a couple of hours, when they returned they found an old caravan there with their numberplates on it - New van gone forever.

We have seen many people leave their camping gear set up at a bush camp while they go sight seeing around the area.
Last time at a bush camp a young couple in a campervan, left a table,chairs,plastic boxes with stuff in,also a Waco 12v car fridge connected to a folding Solar Panel hooked up to 12v battery,they left it out all day.They did this 2 days in a row.
I also have a small sign I made up attached to some concrete rio steel ... it's about 50cm hi x 30cm wide with the bottom edge cut so that I can use my boot to push it into the dirt. The sign says "Motorhome [rego #] is out touring, please call in to see us when we get back"
The only time I have ever had stuff taken or interfered with or moved to another location had been within caravan park/s

You heard it from???? I think this is an urban myth. I heard a similar/same version back in 2011 when we first this the road.
Not saying you should not be wary though.

I do not generally free camp so no problem there. In caravan parks where you can park where you like I have a sign like Ozzie traveller with the rego no & a picture of my motorhome and the word reserved. I hammer it into the ground in the centre of the site. Had no problems when I have used it. Cheers,
