A heads-up for anyone planning to stay at a CP in Mt Isa. Thieves are targeting them and I was a victim over the weekend after I was away from the bus for 45 minutes. Surprisingly, and very thankfully, the only things taken were my el-cheapo pre-paid phone I had just as a backup and an old iPhone 4 with an app that had twin trip meters I used to record distances travelled. They didn't touch my cameras, laptop, wireless modem, GPS or any other valuables which I can only assume is because they were just after booty they could slip into their pockets and not arouse suspicion. Have no idea how they got through the door, which was locked, there were no obvious signs of forced entry, and all windows were still locked. Both the police and the CP owners said these incidents have been increasing over the past few months at all of the city's CPs, and the police are now including them on their rounds. So if you're going to stay at a CP there, make doubly sure you keep your van/motorhome/car locked.

Back in the early 2000s, one of the Mt Isa techs (Telstra) lived in a caravan. One morning he was having a shower & heard the exterior door open. Thinking it was his wife, he ignored it but he discovered this work laptop was gone, along with his wife's handbag. The handbag was alongside his wife (sleeping) so the thief had to reach over her to retrieve it & I had the get the motions going to get another PC.
The laptops were supplied with security cables but the tech said he had nowhere secure to anchor it to. In hindsight, even wrapping it around the table leg would have been ok as it would have caused some noise & perhaps a broken PC as the anchor point attached to the mother board!
Anything that is not bolted down is fair game in North Qld at the moment - mind you Toowoomba isn't much better. And the Qld Govt is floating an idea to let crims back on the street because there are too many in gaol!!!!

Cupie I have fitted a chain as well but I also clip a Fishing bell on the chain at night ( the sort you can clip on the top of your rod) . Any one trying to open the door cant help but ring the bell.

I taught myself how to pick some locks in about 30 minutes with a cheap $15 lockpick set - I didn't want to pay a locksmith $200 callout fee to unlock my house's sliding patio door. Most locks are dismayingly easy to pick - even more so if you have one of the electric vibrating picks which cost about $90 from China.
An add-on lock (Cupie style) or even better, door activated alarm is the way to go - visible stickers act as a deterrant to make the crim pick an easier target.
