strop n i wanted to support the strawberry farmer. We went to their farm in wamuran qld. N bought 10 kilos. For $20. Absolute bargain. Fresh. Young couple with young kids. Glad we went to their farm. Hope we helped in some small way.
I got 5 punnets at 45c for 250grams at a local fruit barn.
Perfect fruit.
Made them into jam.
(jam sugar, lemon juice & fruit. Equal quantities of roughly mashed fruit & sugar. Juice of 1/2 lemon (I used a lime) bring to boil, add a few very small whole berries. Boil for 10min. Test for setting over the next 5 min. I made mine too thick by adding a little jam setter during cooking. Won't do that with the next batch. Fixed it with the later addition of a little inverted sugar to the warmed jam.)
I'll get a few more when we go to do our weekly shopping today.
Also adding a handful to my morning banana & pear.
Yes. Lots can b done with strawberries. I cut them all up and put in freezer Ready for ice cold summer drinks. Strawberries, lady finger banana, cold water, ice. Blend together. Makes a beautiful drink for a hot day.

However, at "10 kilos. For $20" and "got 5 punnets at 45c " one would assume one would have parted with a little more cash - hardly gives the farmer any return on their crop in this predicament.

well john, thats the going price. At that price gotta wonder what they get from the shops Normally. Farmer was happy With price. Also in shopping centre car parks they are being sold for $3 per kilo n thats gotta pay the seller too. we went for a day trip n travelled 200 kms. Round trip to help the farmer.

Can you please enlighten me how by paying the fruit market operator more than the asking price, that would translate into more money for the farmer/producer?
In any case the price had doubled to $1 a punnet on my second visit, so perhaps demand at the 45c (loss leader?) price point had caused the much fabled law of supply & demand in our 'fantastic' free enterprise market based economy, to cause the wholesalers to increase their price to the farmer.
Ha Ha LOL. Bull****! Not bloody likely.
More like the fruit market owner just saw the demand and jacked up his sale price, pocketing the increased margin; patting himself on on the back for his loss leader strategy & laughing at the gullible consumers.
Yer, I did buy at the $1 per punnett price and increased my jam supply with a much improved batch.

PS (Edit) .... All of the local Strawberry Farms in our area have been replaced by housing estates with 500sm lots selling for $400K+.

it would appear that the strawberry producer mentioned in the first reports has some dubious "connections" so there may be more to come as to why this is all happening

Hello dogbox, mine is the first post so what do u mean? The grower sold his strawberries to the public. No dubious connections about it. Some growers are letting the crop die n some are harvesting for nothing and throwing crop away. I put this post up for everyones enjoyment. Hope some people enjoyed it.

I read that the owner of one of the first ones affected were owned by someone from melb with drug connections an he has been buying up all the strawberry farms i'm sure more information will come to light in the near future
