RE: Have you raised your Four Wheel Drive? One of a series in the news at present.

ADR which is federal over rides state law . Its the stupid that push the boundaries . 2 inch lift, 10% firmer springs work great . But that doesnt mean 4 inch lift and 20% firmer is doubly better ? Most these vehicle are set up to drive around the block from show room . Most require some mods to be perfect to tow . The more expensive vehicles with self leveling suspension helps . But they are generally over $100k . Yet a $300 on rear air kit pretty much does the job . Again dont go to extreme !! Aha Like politics and religion!

I had an extra leaf added to the rear springs of my BT50 3 years ago by Green Bros at Grafton. When this thread was posted I checked the amount of extra lift.

I checked the measurement of two other BT50`s that are stock standard. Measuring from the centre of the hub to the bottom of the wheel arch above. Both utes were higher on the right side. one of the owners noticed this when he got it new and went back to mazda, on checking two new vehicles on the show room floor, both were higher on the right side.

Vehicle 1 - Right side 580mm   left side 560mm

Vechicle 2                   580mm                570mm

My ute with extra leaf installed    Right  610mm    left   600mm

I rang Qld transport and this makes it legal, as it is not more than 50mm.

Last time I checked a total maximum lift of 50mm was legal in WA. This lift may be achieved with a suspension lift, body lift or bigger tyres or a combination of all 3 as long as the lift is no more than the maximum allowed. With regards to tyres, it is illegal for them to protrude outside the mudguard, so extra wide tyres are out.

I've mostly always owned 4x4s, mostly Jeeps, and apart from the current one, all had upgraded suspensions with 40mm lift and stock size tyres. My off road driving is again mostly beaches and the tracks to get to them; land based fishing is my passion. I found the extra height sufficient to get me there and back safely.

My current Jeep has not been lifted because its the 2 door version and they stand slightly higher than the 4 door wrangler in stock form

Gday...

I think the issue is that the "lift regulations" were a certain standard for vehicles pre-ESC - these are still legal on vehicles so modified.

What was legal on vehicles not fitted with ESC was not legal on newer vehicles fitted with ESC - and those so modified were illegally done.

I think is further muddied because QLD are either the only state enforcing the 'new' regulations ... or are reacting to the newer vehicles on the road done illegally.

Praps someone in the full know will extrapolate and remove the wild claims and counter-claims being bandied around.

Cheers - John
