Hi all, just recently I discovered that an Emergency App called (Emergency Aus) has been closed and no longer operating.
This app was so comforting when travelling from state to state because it actually warned you with a chime when any dangerous situation like fires were approaching or you were getting too close. You could set the distance from you in the settings to give you heads up and allow time to make a plan. Does anyone know of similar app?
A lot of fire warning sites are out there but you have to log in to find out any updates.
We free camp a lot and we need to receive a warning while we are asleep..... rather than wake up to a disaster at our doorstep.
Cant understand why the old app has been pulled...... crazy!!!
Yes, it was a great App.
When we have no signal we are just a little more
cautious about our surroundings obviously.
Strong winds in thick forested areas can bring a fire to your location very fast. We stopped one night on the south coast of WA and thought we had a great spot until we smelt smoke. So moved on just in case and drove straight into a controlled burn that had gotten out of control.
Just got to take each day as it comes I guess.
Apps get pulled and discontinued when they become too.costly to maintain. Each incarnation of Apple iOS and Android means changes to apps are effectively mandatory. That often means the new version doesn't operate on older devices. Plus there is no guarantee the source info is valid and consistent on unofficial apps, leading to potentially dangerous misinformation. As more authorities put safety warning info on line and in their own apps, all-in-apps will disappear until they start to standardize.
The Emergency Aus app was powered by RIPE Intelligence's Australian emergency information network. RIPE went into liquidation on the 4th June 2018. Therefore the app has been retired. I agree that it was a very useful app and one we used regularly on our travels.
The Emergency + app is very different. It's prime use is to give your location so that if you need to contact any of the emergency services, you can give them either an address or GPS Co-ordinates. I used to work in the communications room of the WA Department of Fire and Emergency Services and it was incredibly helpful. If someone requiring emergency assistance was out of the metropolitan area and unsure of their exact location, it saved a lot of time if they had the Emergency + app on their phone and could give the co-ordinates.
I am not aware of any other app similar to Emergency Aus on the market at this point in time.
