They would be true, and the revenue from fines for speeding, DD and others would be in the tens of millions however the fines don't appear to be a deterrent. Here in WA we have had 6 deaths in five days and most seem on the face of it caused by speed.
Yes those figures would be true. Growing up in Melbourne I very much remember the Declare War on 1034 campaign in 1970 which followed 1034 deaths on Victorian roads in 1969. The road toll has been dropping ever since, safer cars, drink driving laws and testing, seatbelts are some of the reasons. Last year as a comparison 174 people died on Victorian roads, even though the population has increased greatly.
The two deaths near Toodyay were the result of a blowout and subsequent loss of control not speed. Although on country rds the police will report speed as a factor even if you were below the posted limit.
It's why there's lies, lies and damn statistics.
it is fact that if you and all vehicles around you are at 0klm/h then you are unlikely to incurr serious or fatal injuries. It is the sudden stops that are the problem anyhow.
Seriously though if there is an accident caused by someone driving at over the posted speed limit what is the point of lowering speed limit. THis is what they are doing in WA.
the statistics for death per 100,000 has fallen considerably mostly due to the safety improvements in/on motor vehicles not an improvement in our driving behaviour

Improved road design and building safer cars has definately had a huge impact on the road toll but there has also been plenty of things which have also impacted on peoples behaviour. The introduction of compulsory seat belts/child restraints and random breath testing in the 70s as well as radar speed checks have had also played their part. Other more recent changes include the introduction of head protection for bike riders, lowering of speed limits in built up areas and in school zones. I,m sure that you could keep adding to the list of things that have been changing the way that we behave when we are on the road.
Go drive a 70 car ? Compare to todays cars . They are in a different league !! Even light trucks are way safer !! ABS , Stability Control, Tyres , Crumple Zones etc . Then theres 1000s more on the road now too !! More woman driving ..lol
