I am now planning to drag my Jayco Starcraft (NOT off-road design) from Broken Hill , following the "dog Fence" north to Tobooburra, then up to the corner.
Return thru Milparinka, Tibooburra etc towards Louth and Tilpa.
I am looking for recent Road Condition reports and wether OR NOT such a van is suitable for the area.
You say - "following the dog fence"?
The dog fence follows the NSW-SA border north from Co ckburn to Cameron Corner. Most of that track is closed to the public and it is certainly not suitable for a caravan.
Cheers,
Peter
I was only going on some tourist info (out of NSW Govt for the Cameron Corner area) which recommends travelling north from B/Hill, thru Silverton, following the fence to Grey's Fort. Then up to C/Corner.
Your advice that much of the fence is closed to tourists is surprising, BUT your advice about the road condition is most appreciated.
The route north from Silverton near the border is unlikely to be a good idea for a Starcraft
You could take the Silver City Highway from Broken Hill to Tibooburra. (It goes close to Milparinka which is a historic place) Then it is about 130km to Fort Grey (and a National Park camping area). Then about 15km after Fort Grey you will come close to the dog fence running along the NSW-Queensland border. It is not possible to actually drive along the dog fence, but you will see it and then cross through it just before Cameron Corner.
That route will be OK for a caravan provided you are prepared to go slow for the rough or corrugated spots which will vary from week to week.
The "Return thru Milparinka, Tibooburra etc towards Louth and Tilpa" is another question entirely. They are a very long way apart. The road along the Darling also varies in quality and is black soil, so DO NOT get caught along there in any rain at all because you will have to sit until it dries out.
Get yourself a HEMA atlas for good road information.
we did a convoy of various vans to Cameron corner, Broken Hill, Tibooburra then camped at Olive downs, left the vans and did a day trip to cameron corner. ( the roads in the NP were ok for vans if you took your time.) Stayed 3 nights at OLive downs. returned via White Cliffs
Kieron do you want to buy a new van ? If so attempt the trip you mention .
Seriously we have it the last two weeks been from broken hill straight up to Tibooburra which is good but you are mad to go to Cameron corner in your van totally not suitable for that section you will also need a real 4x4 for the clearance on the road to the corner , ie not a Subaru type clearance , from Cameron corner to merty merty was even worse we then went to Birdsville which while still rough with patches where the red rocks were pushed up between the wheel ruts around 300 mm high .
On the other hand the Birdsville track was, we thought really good , as is most but not all the Oodnadatta track . Today we are heading to the painted desert from cadney Park then on to the north flinders ranges .
We have a patrol Ute towing an off road camper trailer with high clearance wouldnt do it in anything less suited to very rough roads
Just our experience
