Great place Airlie Beach, loved it when I was there for a week a couple of years back.
Now, if you want to drive? Me, I would go strait down the Bruce, Paciffic and Hume, hang a right off the Hume at the sign to Benalla. About 5 days easy driving or 4 doing it a little faster. Easy peasy. IMO.
You could stay at Waverly Creek rest area, approx 160km north of Rockhampton...Gin Gin rest area, as you come into town on left before the servos OR the showground...Just south of Tweed heads on the left OR Byron Bay (My usual stop)...Twelve Mile Creek, CVP on left about 30km north of Newcastle...Jugiong Show Ground...Benalla. Wiki is you friend for exact locations I have mentioned.
