Thanks Craig We normally live in Wellington East which is a canal development on reclaimed swampland on the lower Murray.
That means we are already highly across citronella candles, mossie zappers, insect repellent, light coloured loose clothing, tucked in socks, exact operating hours, fine mesh flyscreens, narrow targeted nozzle aerosol's, fly swats, ultrasonic deterrents and a few other avoidance and elimination techniques.
Our yacht has midge screens on windows, hatches and doors to counter the little biters and we also use battery operated mossie zappers.
These have however been generally unnecessary this trip as its too bl__dy cold for the mossies and other biters. Thanks for your concern.
Hi All now nearly 5 weeks on the Murray camping in beautiful and very different spots each night. We have grabbed three showers along the way at caravan parks and had one luxury overnight stay in a 4.5 star hotel at the cost of less than three nights in caravan parks. We have seen scenery few get to see, done long walks on many occassions before setting off in the morning and generally had a brilliant time. The Murray being in minor flood has eventually convinced us to turn and sail with the flow back home and return another time to do the higher reaches. I suspect by the time we get back to Wellington East we will have been 6 weeks on water. Whilst the original equipment costs are high they are well less than equivalent age, size and condition caravans and especially motorhome. The ability to free wildcamp in many of the best of all possible spots in complete tranquility and privacy is generally unmatched by on land camping especially on river banks. Unless something extra exciting happens now I think I will sign off this thread now. :)
PS Also I would have loved to have posted more photos but this has proved very useful challenging with the low signal strength on many parts of our trip. we have taken a huge number of dramatic shots and its hard to beat a sunset taken across a still river with reflections.

Back home and unpacked now from over 5 weeks travelling up and back on the Murray River living onboard our trailable yacht and free camping every night in spectacular river locations. Total accommodation cost for over 5 weeks superb camping was $30 for 6 showers and $150 for a nights 4.5 star hotel room ( with a couple more showers).
Total petrol cost for 5 weeks travelling on most days was under $300 and we did buy 8 dinners out, 7 lunches and 3 breakfasts and did some fairly limited fresh food shopping and an alcohol restock carrying the rest onboard the yacht with us for the entire journey. One laundromat visit mid trip as well.
As originally posted ( and argued about with a few ) it is an excellent alternative to the more traditional styles of caravanning and camping. Signing off now from Graeme and Clare
Graeme: this forum is very poor in the way it handles aged threads and I note this thread is now four years old which means it's difficult to navigate and many people will have missed it. May I request that you start a new thread for any further journeys?

Very interesting but a little like Blue Hills, it never ends.
It should have been posted in the Travel Blog section of the forum originally, although it may not have been seen by as many members there.
Life is a journey in itself. Enjoy.
