Hi all after visiting the kids in Newcastle we are considering towing the van to Tin Can Bay Qld and are concerned about going through Brisbane. Should we go around Brisbane bypassing all together or is the freeway OK and what is the best time of day to go through Brisbane if we go that way. We are thinking about traveling via the coast. Is it freeway all the way? We haven't been that way for about 8 years.

Pretty much up the SE Freeway from the Gold Coast and just after Springwood take the Gateway turnoff. Take heed of the 70kph limit on the off ramp, the corner is fairly tight and leads into a two into one and then another merge onto the main Gateway. Lots of roadworks once you pass the Gateway Toll Bridge. Mostly runs at the 80kph speed limit if you are travelling out of rush hour.
My best guess is be travelling from the Southside around 10:30am onwards. Still a busy road but the major rush tapers off before 9:30/10am.
Next big one is after you merge onto the Bruce Highway at Bald Hills bridge over the estuary. I think there are six lanes and you need to merge to your right. Probably lane three is the best option till the merge finishes and traffic settles.
Only major problem is when past the Aussie World. A few K's further down the road there is the Moololaba/ Sunshine Motorway turnoff and traffic can be built up in the left lane if traffic is heavy.
Pretty much two lane highway after the Bribie Island turn off till just before Gympie. When you pass the Servo (Golden Nugget) on your left coming into Gympie, it's time to get in the right hand lane and head uphill. At the brow of the Hill there is the turnoff to Tin Can Bay/Rainbow Beach.

Excellent advice. Precise, comprehensive and accurate.
Definitely try to get over the Gateway & through the roadworks before 2.30pm. Any time after that and the "school run" starts, as well as early start workers going home. Traffic swells noticeably after that and 40-60kph means things are going well. I go that way regularly on work trips and try to get everything on the Southside done by 2pm to start going back north.
I live in the S.E. Qld area and Yulgamron has really nailed it. The only thing to watch is the run up from Just south of Springwood to the Gateway merge, as there are roadworks happening there as they commence widening from three lanes to four lanes each way.

You never get a second chance at a first impression, so make the first a good one.
As a former SEQer before hitting the road, and using the Gateway regularly, I can't agree enough with the original answer. In fact, when it comes to most cities, the best route is the freeway or motorway or toll. They really are there to make the trip quicker
We just travelled from Victoria to Rockdale, Sydney, and were pleasantly surprised with the efficiency of the Hume Highway and the M5 (yes, even the tunnel) to get us to our current caravan park.

Don't forget that the Gateway Bridge has tolls and make sure you pay them promptly. If you have an interstate toll tag they will work there and make it easy to pay the toll.
