I dont really think chinese or not comes into the picture , its whether or not the quality is in the product . From what I read on this and other forums theres a hell of a lot of Aust made lemons out there, made and sold by unscrupulous aussies . The only downside as I see it is loss of local jobs. But it is now a global economy ! Sink or swim .

the quality of the imported Chinese campers and caravans is improving all the time being fitted out with the same fixtures and appliances as the aussie built ones I suppose it is like the jap crap we use to get in the 50-60's it just kepts getting better

What started off as Jap crap, came under the post war guidance of quality gurus like Demming. 'Made in Japan' eventually became an indicator of quality. Will China eventually go that way?
I know several Au producers who design product & have it manufactured, sometimes in their co-owned China factories, under their strict supervision. Lots of pitfalls for those following that route though.

I did hear that "Chinese vans are built there & assembled, then disassembled for freight savings & reassembled in Australia". Does this mean they are worn out before they are sold (screw holes, etc)??
For any nomads who may be in Townsville & are concerned about the Chinese influence, there is an excellent letter to the editor of the Townsville Bulletin yesterday - written by Debra Gibson of the Pinnacles. A number of people would like to see Debra take up politics - but she's in her early 70s.
It was in response to one written & published the previous day by a "die-hard" Liberal supporter.

More Chinese junk ready to add to our garbage tips in just a few years! I wouldn't dare take that XT 12 off the bitumen! But then you get what you pay for and I agree some of our local manufacturers need to improve their product and warranty service.

My Daughter purchased a China made Au assembled camper trailer. It certainly looks the goods & has the support of a long term Au CT manufacturer.
We have a Chinese made camper and don5 have any problems with it. The so called Australian manufactures need to wake to themselves or they will go the way of Holden, Toyota and Ford

We have an Australian built van, if we were to get a new van it most certainly would NOT be a Chinese heap of sh!t.
Our first camper-trailer was bought from a bloke who ran an earthmoving business at Mareeba (he was later up on a murder charge but escaped - killed a bloke with a back hoe).
He got into the business of hiring camper trailers out to people wanting to do the Cape & was offering to sell "used units". He said he never had any returned that needed fixing.
We hired one for a weekend at Lake Tinaroo & were impressed with the ventilation (for the tropics) & size of the tent.
When I went back to buy a used one, he said he'd sold the business but would sell us a trailer, a new tent (was made in Ipswich & was good quality) & give me the plans.
Pat bought me a welder for my birthday & both it & a battery drill paid for themselves. All worked well & we had a fairly cheap trailer (about $5000 complete).
The trailer was made in China & had a few short comings -
1. the tray was narrow & not quite as high as Aussie ones but it still had a full QS bed (the sides had wings to make it the full 5' wide).
2. the suspension had heavy slipper springs
3. changing the wheel bearings (if ever they failed - heavy parallel rollers) was difficult without an internal cutter (some imported hubs bought from suppliers are similar now).
4. there was no Aussie wheel that could match the Chinese ones - went to a wrecker & found an odd ball one that I could use as a spare.
The trailer's pros -
1. it was almost impossible to break with a single drawbar & bolted connections instead of welds that could crack.
2. it had a full sized table that slid out on Teflon runners - enabling everything to be accessed easily.
3. it was cheap & interesting to build up myself.
4. it went everywhere my car could go.
5. when my Patrol's brakes failed at White Cliffs through no known reason, I was able to use the trailer's brakes to get us "safely" to Emerald - where they after finding no fault, just changed the master cylinder - all ok after!
I use my first bonus from work when I sold my soul to going on a contract (no RDOs, no overtime) to the "Big T" to replace the wheels & axle & add electric brakes (after an interesting trip down Clyde Mountain).

Remember the time when the Japanese cars started appearing with "extras" asd standard equipment, electric wipers, car radio, heaters just to mention a few. It took the Aussie car manufacturers some time to catch up. Perhaps the Aussie RV manufacturers may get a kick up the rear.
Dont kid yourselves that the Chinese products are inferior to our own they have been manufacturing and exporting technology to other parts of the world for thousands of years. Like the Japanese did after WW2 (with the help of people like Dr Demming) they are in the process of modernising their industry and the quality is going to continually get better. I can also remember the jokes about things coming out of Japan in the 60s - I dont hear too many people making those sort of negative comments now. It was only a short time ago that the Koreans were also copping it about quality yet KIA were the only manufacturers offering a 7 year unlimited warranty on all their vehicles. You are right if our Aussie manufactures dont get their act together and ensure that the quality of a locally built van is spot on then we will lose another of our industries to someone who will.

Well I think they certainly can be worse that the good vans - there are still plenty of good caravan manufacturers in Aus - we are very happy with our 4 year old River with control rider suspension. The Chinese imports may look good but what will they be like in 4 years? Would you travel in a Chinese airliner (If they made them!).
I hate to break it to you bulariver but not only do they build and sell planes they were the 3rd country to put a man into space back in 2003. If we were ever silly enough to get into a war with them I wouldnt be putting all my hopes on the belief that their equipment is going to fail

To answer your question - because the C919s dont come into service until 2020 - all the Chinese operators have ordered them to replace their current Boeing and Airbus medium haul fleets. I have a strong suspicion that they have probably borrowed at least some of the technology from the likes of Boeing or Airbus anyhow.
